Poor. 5.5 x 8.5. Very fragile original work with lots of creased or missing corners, covers have heavy soil, chipping, edge tears, creasing, corners heavily bumped and creased, stapled binding tight, pages yellowing and brittle, 629 pages + ads in back, compiled from newspaper accounts of the time, biography of Ulysses S. Grant and the Civil War with facsimile letters and illustrations and six maps.
Fair. No Jacket. Ex-Library "Illustrated by twenty-six engravings; eight fac-similes of letters from Grant, Lincoln, Sheridan, Buckner, Lee, Etc; and six maps. With a portrait and sketch of Schuyler Colfax." Cover has significant wear and is faded; front inner hinge is loose; pages are in very good condition.
Good. Date is an estimate. Fraying to original cloth at spine ends and corners. Soime foxing particularly evident on title page and frontispiece. Tissue guard for frontispiece intact. Otherwise vg or better, tight and clean in original cloth with original endpapers. Hinges sound. No splitting along gutters. 630 pages. Gray decorated cloth with black decorations and gilt lettering. Illustrated with numerous engravings/reproductions. Printed on lightly browning paper. No publisher, place, or year given, but circa late 19th century. Books of this size, weight and age are often encountered in beat up condition. This one is well above average.
