I have dozens of sailing picture books, but none of their images equal the fifty-year-old or more black & white work of Morris Rosenfeld (1985-1968), arguably the greatest yachting photographer who ever lived. Ironically, Rosenfeld, while revered by yachtsmen everywhere, was a nice Jewish boy who would never have been admitted to their snooty WASP clubs.
Morris's son Stanley was himself a superb marine photographer, but as A CENTURY UNDER SAIL shows, his work lacks that sublime, undefinable edge possessed by his father. The images by Rosenfeld père in A CENTURY UNDER SAIL were first published in 1947 under the name SAIL HO! Although the screens were less fine, overall, the photo reproductions are better and tonally more subtle and lively in this version than in the version published half a century later.
