The quake in south-central Alaska was of devastating proportions; it had a registered magnitude on the Richter Scale of 8.2 to 8.7, the most devastating quake on record in North America. It was amazing that the deathtoll was not greater than 114, considerng the magnidture and great seismic waves that occurred. Most of the information in this book was taken from the numerous reports compiled and published by the United States Geological Survey shortly after the quake. The photographs were gathered from a number of sources in Alaska and California and were chosen to portray the vast destructive nature of the quake and subsequent tsunamis and seiche waves. The text is short. I have tried to let the photos tell the story. " The book is jam-packed with b/w photos, with an 8-page color photo section. Bibliography.
