Illustrated throughout--144 images in all, and all period in black and white. 48 pages. The author discusses free Negroes and free people of color and their participation in the War of 1812 with emphasis on the justified trust held in them by General W.C.C. Claiborne, their welcome by General Andrew Jackson, their preparations for battle, and the glory that ensued January 8, 1815 on the field of Chalmette which saw the largest gathering of African American troops ever brought together on American soil and turned out to be the final major battle of the war. Owner's contemporary ink inscription on front flyleaf, and recipient's early rubberstamp name on verso of frontispiece. Spine is moderately faded, with uneven quarter-inch chip along base of spine, nick at crown, front and rear covers have moderate,... [AFRICAN-AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY]. (HAYNES, Rev. Lemuel). SKETCHES OF THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF THE REV. LEMUEL HAYNES, A.M., for Many Years Pastor of a Church in Rutland, Vt., and Late in Granville, New York by Timothy Mather Cooley, D.D. With Some Introductory Remarks by William B. Sprague, D.D. [originally published in New York, by Harper & Brothers, in 1837]. Small octavo, embossed brown cloth, spine stamped in gilt, 348 pages, illustrated (with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Haynes). Born in West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1753, to a white woman and a black man, Lemuel Haynes was adopted by Deacon David Rose. He received a formal education, and following service as a minuteman and later a private in the Continental army, he prepared for the ministry, becoming a Congregational clergyman. He later married a white woman, had ten children, and eventually became a pastor, in 1788, at the West Parish in Rutland, Vermont. "Among early American Negro writers Haynes was relatively prolific...he was also more than ordinarily literate. The two clergymen who tutored him for his profession taught him Latin and Greek...He could quote verbatim an astonishing portion of the Scriptures...Indeed, Middlebury College in 1804 conferred upon him a master's degree, causa honoris, probably the first of its kind in black America. 'Sketches of the Life and Character of the Rev. Lemuel Haynes, A. M'....probably demonstrated...'the high esteem in which...[Haynes] was held by his dominion. ' The Sketches contains a goodly number of letters written by Haynes between 1795 and 1818..." [Blyden Jackson's 'A History of Afro-American Literature, ' p. 70-71].

He gives his frank opinion of his generals, as in the writing of Nov. 29, 1864, he states "I do not much like the manner in which our army is being handled by genl. Scofield Franklin. Retreated to this place during last night, Enemy advance and attack us with 2 Corps of infantry and one of cav. At 4p.m. A desperate battle ensues; charge after charge is made with unparallel desperation and repulsed until 10.p.m. " Describes battle and losses on each side. [Bunker's Hill, Boston] the Seat of War in New England By an American Volunteer, With the Marches of the Several Corps Sent By the Colonies Towards Boston With the Attack on Bunkers Hill

by Sayer, Robert (1725-1794) & John Bennett (D.1787), Publishers

exactly this used book

London: printed for R. Sayer & J. Bennett, September 2nd, 1775. Copper-engraved map, with original colour. 20 3/4 x 23 3/4 inches. An exciting, important, and rare map, and a landmark map of the American Revolution, dramatically transmitting in visual terms the state of the action in New England a year before the Declaration of Independence, and giving dramatic visual details of the Battle of Bunker Hill. The map was published by Sayer & Bennett, then leading map publishers of England. Created shortly after word of Bunker Hill reached London, it celebrates the British victory in the battle, but gives a portent of the bad news that would eventually come, as it shows armed colonial troops marching from Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire toward Boston. The map is actually three maps on one sheet: a large map, measuring 18 x 15½ inches, showing eastern Massachusetts, and two smaller maps showing details of Boston Harbor and the Battle of Bunker Hill. In the large map, several lines of American troops are shown marching to Boston. A rebel encampment near Worcester is depicted in addition to General Washington's troops, made up of riflemen; Virginia horsemen, and New York grenadiers. Artillery companies with horse-drawn wagons ride from Connecticut; wagons of provisions come from Rhode Island, and rangers and Portsmouth volunteers descend from New Hampshire. British troops, including those of Putnam and Ward, are shown camped outside of Boston. The map, with original color, is very detailed, showing rivers, streams, towns, and municipal boundaries. The two insets are located on the right side of the map. The lower inset map, entitled "Plan of the Town of Boston with the Attack on Bunkers-Hill in the Peninsula of Charlestown, the 17th of June 1775, " is an incredibly dramatic map. Measuring 11½ x 5¼ inches, it constructs a panopticon embracing all of Charlestown and Boston. Charlestown is shown under attack by British forces, with the town in flames (coloured...

Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Tazewell County

by Allensworth

exactly this new book

Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb. Munsell Publishing Company, Chicago Illinois (1905)
New. No Jacket Private Press. 8.5" x 11" The early military history of Tazewell County, IL, is recalled in excerpts from the hard-to-find 1905 book: Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Tazewell County, published by Munsell Publishing Company of Chicago. The Tazewell portions were edited by Ben C. Allensworth. The 54-page spiral bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# 8.5" x 11" paper. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. The booklet begins with the Black Hawk Indian War of 1832, including an account of Stillman's Defeat, and then moves on to the Mexican War of 1846 and Company G of the 4th Illinois Volunteers, with names of officers. A large part of the booklet, of course, deals with the Civil War, beginning on the home front with resolutions supporting the union, bounties offered to volunteers, and a County Sanitary Fair held to raise funds to alleviate the suffering of soldiers and help their families during their absence. The county furnished 200 soldiers for the Spanish American war in 1898, membrs of Company K and Company G of the Fifth Illinois Regiment. Names of membrs of Company G are given. Following this overview, there is a lengthy list of Civil War soldiers from the county by regiment, with brief regimental histories. These include the Seventh Infantry, Companies E, K and D; the Eighth Infantry, Companies D, E, F, I, and K; the 15th Infantry, Company A; the 17th Infantry, Companies B and G; the 18th Infantry, Company K; the 26th Infantry, Company K; the 27th Infanry, company E; the 28th Infantry, Companies A, B, and K; the 31st Infantry, Company I; the 32nd Infantry, Company I; the 38th Infantry, company G; the 44th Infantry, Companies E and K; the 45th Infantry, Companies A and D; the 47th Infantry, Companies A, B, E, F, H, I, and K; the 49th Infantry, Company K; the 51st Infantry, Company D; the 58th Infantry, Companies E, F, H, and I; 61st Infantry, Companies C, G, I and K; 62nd Infantry, Company H; 67th Infantry, Company G; 68th Infantry, Company K;...
