About this title: Steve Conway (born Walter James Groom in the working-class East London neighborhood of Bethnal Green) was the new Al Bowlly to British audiences of the '40s, a smooth crooner who straddled that thin line between big-band jazz balladry and the more straight-laced world of "light orchestral" easy listening. However, Conway fell much more into the latter category than Bowlly, thanks to the Mantovani-like swelling orchestral backing of songs like "Mona Lisa" (which Conway recorded long before Nat King Cole did) and "Autumn Leaves," but he had a similarly light vocal touch.
