About this title: Verve Records took some flack in early 2001 for releasing a jazz entry in its series of Pure compilations at the same time that the label had entered into a joint venture with Columbia Records to exploit Ken Burns' jazz television documentary by issuing a series of compilations tied in to the program; Verve seemed to many to be undercutting what appeared to be the biggest opportunity to popularize jazz in a long time.
