About this title: Subtitled "Vol. 1," this is the first in a proposed series of Shine! albums to focus on "new and edgy alternative acts," as the press release states. Not surprisingly, 12 of the disc's 18 selections -- all from different artists and dating from 1996 through 1999 -- derive from releases under the enormous Universal umbrella of labels. But, since that encompasses such a wide assortment of music, there's no shortage of solid selections here, all of which easily fall into the rather loose concept unifying these songs.
