About this title: The artists on Cleopatra's Virgin Voices, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Madonna range from veteran new wave acts -- most on the darker, colder side of synth-pop -- to straight-out industrial groups. Like most tribute albums, Virgin Voices is erratic; when the tracks don't work here, it's usually due to uncommitted performances or generic, undistinctive dance-music backing. But there are some good moments -- surprisingly, two of the best come from industrial heavyweights KMFDM and Front Line Assembly, who reinvent "Material Girl" and "Justify My Love," respectively.
