About this title: A ragtag of sessions from 1945, 1946, 1952, and 1953. The 1945 cuts (including "Salt Peanuts") also have Charlie Parker aboard; the ones from 1946 are less innovative and far more commercial-minded, with Alice Roberts on vocals. There's also a number with strings from 1953, and a selection ("Perdido") from the famous 1953 Massey Hall concert with Gillespie, Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. There's good stuff here, even if it's thematically scattered; it may make more sense to some to get the material on more focused compilations. Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
