  • The Outlaws Are The Ultimate Band Ever!!!! Apr 29, 2012

BEST OF THE OUTLAWS: GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES is the best anthology ever put out on the Outlaws, whom I consider the best band period, Southern or otherwise. It's hard to say why they didn't achieve the Top 40 success of such groups as the Allman Brothers, who were bluesy/jazzy; Lynyrd Skynyrd, who were crunching hard rock; the Marshall Tucker Band, who were into Western swing; or .38 Special, who were more pop-oriented. My theory is that they were just too musically talented for their own good. Their music has so many details that it takes a lifetime of listening to pick up everything.

The band's sound is unique, blending the California rock of the Byrds, Jackson Browne, Buffalo Springfield, the early Doobie Brothers, Poco, and the Eagles with the Southern boogie of the Allmans, Skynyrd, and Tucker, creating a unique whole that has influenced not only contemporary country, but also the jam-band, alt-country, and roots-rock sounds of the early 90s, and even some heavy metal. The guitar playing, besides being inspired by such "regular" country and rock players as Buck Owens, Johnny Winter, Don Rich, and Joe Walsh, also features a heavy bluegrass influence. If you're a rock guitarist wanting to add bluegrass to your palette of influences, this album is essential listening.

Overall, if you claim to enjoy pop, rock, bluegrass and/or country, DO NOT PASS THIS ONE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
