"East West is filmed with actors speaking both French and Russian (w/English subtitles) because the characters are leaving their adopted France to return to Russia during Stalin's reign. Apparently, Stalin put word out to all the "White Russians" (ex-pat Russians who fled during the revolution) around the world that they were needed back home in the motherland to help rebuild after WWII, with the promise that all past history would be ignored as they all worked together to rebuild. Many Russians, perhaps homesick for their birth country, did return only to be accused of treason, spying, abandonment of their country, etc, and "placed" in any town or village the Russian authorities deemed apt. The family in East West consists of a Russian father (Oleg Menshikov--who is also wonderful in "Burnt by the Sun", another Russian film with incredible historic story of the betrayals and atrocities of the Stalin purges after WWII), a French mother and their young son, who was born in France. They are beaten, accused of spying, then all three are assigned a single room in a communal house where they are spied upon, befriended and betrayed, until finally they betray one another. The ending is not to be missed, and the acting and story are incredible. If you are not a fan of foreign films, this one will change your mind."
