The Phantom of the Opera (1990)

directed by Tony Richardson
featuring Ian Richardson, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Burt Lancaster, Teri Polo, Charles Dance

About this title: This adaptation of Gaston Leroux's indefatigable "grand guignol" piece The Phantom of the Opera stars British actor Charles Dance as Erik the Phantom. This adaptation by playwright Arthur Kopit soft-pedals the horrific elements of the story to concentrate on the love the tragic Erik bears toward innocent chorus singer Teri Polo. The film boasts a stronger supporting cast than was usual for a TV movie, including Burt Lancaster (as the masked phantom's father), Ian Richardson and Jean-Pierre Cassel. The 1990 Phantom of the Opera reunited director Tony Richardson and composer John Addison, who'd ... read more

"I loved this movie. It isy favorite of all the phantom films. Its based an the Yeston play but its the story. The music from the play isn't in the movie, instead actual opera collections are used.

This version was filmed in the Paris opera house where the book takes place. Naturally the film as a beautiful location. The onlky set, the lagoon, is convincingly done.

Teri Polo( meet the parents) and Charles Dance( Alien 3) star in this lavish film. Romanic and well acted the film is the most enjoyable of all other phantom productions. The underground forest scene is the highlight of the mini series. The film does an excellent job of dealing with Erik( aka The Phantom) and Christine. Christine does love Erik, but still is in love with Comte Phillipe de Chagny. It keeps the viewer guessing on what will happen. There are plenty of plot twists such as old loves, secret fathers, and motives. This movie basically deals with the reasons behind the character's actions.

The singing is well done. One cannot even tell the dubbing of the singers. Tero Polo did sing herself before receiving Erik's lessons.

This is very hard to find, but its well worth buying. Any Phantom Fan would love it in their collection."
