About this title: John Sturges directed this sequel to his Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which is more of a melancholy character study than an action Western. "This 1967 version of the gunfight at the OK corral and the events following is the best of all the many films on this historical event. Unlike other versions, Hour of the Gun opens with the big gunfight and proceeds from there. The interplay between Garner and Robards is not to be missed. While some historical license is taken, as with the gunfight in Mexico between Wyatt Earp and Ike Clanton, (James Garner and Robert Ryan) ... I'm OK with that. It's too bad it didn't really happen this way. Leonard Maltin's review of this film doesn't do it justice. Perhaps Maltin did not appreciate the film's avoidance of maudlin romance and it's concentration on revenge. Again, I'm OK with that."
