"Y'know... I don't think I've ever had this much fun watching a family implode.
It's the tale of the Rubin family. The Rubin family's life circles around their mother's expectations. Claudia Rubin is a respected member of the community, a Rabbi, über-mother par excellence. She writes books, goes on TV and the radio and generally seems to be respected and looked to as a moral compass.
Her husband, Norman, is a writer himself, but clearly stands in his wife's shadow, their four grown-up children seem to shape their lives according to their mother's wishes.
Crisis breaks out when two of these children and the husband break out of their roles. One with a bang, the others more quietly. This transition is absolutely fascinating to follow, the characters are described well and lovingly. Even though they all have their faults, and they have plenty, I cared about what happened to them."
"I've been on a reading roll lately, enjoying almost anything I've read. But this was probably my favorite book of late. The portrayal of the family in crisis was harrowing and funny, and made me think about motherhood in a pretty deep way. I loved this."
