Weisner illustrations uses watercolors, gouache, colored inks, pencil, and color pencils to build the visual of the pigs coming to life. He also uses negative space to build suspense. He uses bold print, bubble text(like in comics), colored print, and broken print to help aid in the visualization of the story changing. Kids will enjoy the suspense of where the pigs will appear next.

Lesson Idea: Use the stories in the text to explore other fairy tales."
"The pictures are very creative in this book as they have the pigs coming out of the story. What I do not like is that the words are not made important and do not match the pictures. The words say the wolf ate the pigs, but since they came out of the pages they survive. It becomes more of an illustrated book as the focus is mostly on the pictures. It is clever how the book includes other nursery rhymes for the children to make text to text connections. The mediums are cool too how he switches mediums from watercolor to printed inks, showing the differences between them being part of the story or outside the story."
"This story begins in the same way most Three Little Pig stories begin. The pigs built three houses. One was made of straw, one was made of sticks, and one was made of bricks. As the wolf approached the third house, he began huffing and puffing, and blew the pigs right off of the page. The pigs then begin a journey by exiting the border of the fairytale and beginning their own adventure where they visit other stories. During this time they visit a dragon, the cat and the fiddle, and other famous characters. In the end, the pigs return back to their original story, and get a little help from their new friend the dragon. The pictures and creation of the illustrations with the text is truly amazing in this book. Wiesner was creative with his fonts, pictures, and colors, which puts a spin on the traditional fairytale. Through his creative illustrations, Wiesner is able to create a story, which seems traditional, but surprises his readers into entering an imaginary world."
"Great illustrations (which we've come to expect from David Wiesner's books!). The story of the three pigs turns into something else as the pigs are 'huffed and puffed' off the pages of their story and make their way through other story books, picking up other characters as friends along the way before returning to their own story and rewriting the ending. Fun book that kids who are already familiar with the original story will enjoy the new twist on. Great way to teach our kids that we can 'rewrite' our own stories, too."
