"This book is absolutely adorable! It's about a little girl and her special memories visiting her grandparents. There is a window that holds meaning for her because she can look in from outside at her grandparents, look outside at the world, and many other things. The beautiful mixed media pictures really represent a child's point of view and allow the reader to connect to the innocent ways of the narrator. It also is relevant for many readers; children can really identify to the love she feels at her grandparents' house and the words beautifully echo the child's sentiments. The books is quality because it not only has good pictures, but also has a well written and catchy story."
"The Hello, Goodbye Window is a story of a young girl and her visits to her grandparent's home. She identifies something special about this house; one kitchen window. The story evolves as we find out how meaningful the window is to her and to her family. Where one family may see it has just a window to look through, it is a place where she says hello and goodbye to her grandparents, as well as a way to the outside world. It is all written through the perspective of the little girl in the story as she explains all the different uses of the window. The illustrator creates no fine lines or shapes in the story. Rather, all the paintings in the story look as if a child has created them. They are full of color that look as if a rainbow was thrown on each page. It is a book that touches your heart as you see the love between the little girl and her grandparents."
"Illustrated by: Chris Raschka Juster, N. (2005). The hello, goodbye window. New York: Scholastic Inc. Summary: This story is about a little girl who goes to visit her grandparents. They have a special window called the hello, goodbye window where you can sit and see who is coming and going. They make funny faces out the window and can play hide and seek. The story talks about all the things she does at grandma and grandpa's house. It is a good story that won the Caldecott medal. I think it would be a good story to read about what we do at our grandparent's house and what we feel when we go there. It is a sweet story that a grandparent can read with a child or the parent's can read in preparation for a child to spend the night at a grandparent's house."
"Description Norton Juster starts out this book wonderfully. He describes what a hello, goodbye window is and then begins to describe all the varied people in the little girl's life. It is a book about cross generations and mixed marriages. The book takes us through activities the little girl does at her grandparent's house. The story gives the reader examples of what this particular family listens to for music, eats for breakfast and enjoys as leisure time activities. The little girl is picked up by her parents later in the book. The book demonstrates many positive, smiling, and loving adult relationships and all the joy that comes from them.
Analysis The item I immediately noticed was that both the grandparents and the parents were a mixed marriage. In my generation that is a rare occurrence. My question would be to examine how children notice or not this situation? Is this something to directly point out? Or do we as teachers want to exemplify that this is nothing special and is perfectly normal? The book has its limitations in the subject matter. It is pretty fluffy and superficial. There is nothing deep a teacher can really dig into. The amount of text and number of pages suggests this is a book for older children, but the word choice and sentence length target a younger reader. This is were I see a conflict. I don't know if a second grader would find this book exciting. On the other hand I don't know if a early first grader has the attention to read the entire book.
Reflection I would use this book in my class as a read aloud to 1st graders. I would not specifically point out that the men are white and the women are black. Instead I would ask questions about their heritage and compare it to the heritage of the students in the classroom. Through discussions about the illustrations, I could demonstrate that people of many different ethnic backgrounds can be full of love and kindness towards each other."
