Description: New. 0763615781 From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Schlitz (The Hero Schliemann ) wrote these 22 brief monologues to be performed by students at the school where she is a librarian; here, bolstered by lively asides and unobtrusive notes, and illuminated by Byrd's (Leonardo, Beautiful Dreamer) stunningly atmospheric watercolors, they bring to life a prototypical English village in 1255. Adopting both prose and verse, the speakers, all young, range from the half-wit to the lord's daughter, ... read more

"Never have I been so immersed in history. Anytime someone visited my house this weekend, I promptly sat them down and read them one of the more devastating shorts. Every one of them said, with white faces, "I wasn't expecting that."
Schlitz has performed a miracle. I learned more about medieval times in the hour I spent reading this book than all my school years combined. To summarize the introduction, it's easy to forget, when speaking of taxes and laws and years and kings, that every decree, every royal decision affected living, breathing people. This book takes a look at the children of this time and does not shy away from the inescapable horrific situations they'd find themselves in.
When I see the Newberry medal on a book by Gaiman or DiCamillo, I prepare myself for fine literature. This book came out of nowhere but packed an even stronger punch. I'm trying to get it into as many hands as I can."
"Heads up to all of you who love Medieval Times. This book won the Newbery Award for 2007 and I think like many others, I was slow to read it because it didn't "look like" a Newbery Award winner. What a mistake. This book is so good! And it only takes about an hour to read! It was developed by a librarian for students studying the middle ages. It is a series of monologues about kids living at that time. The sidebars and inserted pages give historical details about what the children are talking about. You hear from 22 characters from the miller's son, the blacksmith's daughter, to the knight's son and the Lord's daughter. It really gives you a feel for the middle ages that you will remember! It is meant to be a play. The author said that she wrote it as a series of monologues because no one likes having a small part in a play! Some of the vignettes are dialogs. (Did you know that "in 1212 a French shepherd boy had a vision that the Holy Land could be recovered by innocent children. Thirty to forty thousand children from France and Germany set off to Palestine, believing that God would favor their cause because of their faith, love and poverty... Most of them starved, froze to death, or were sold into slavery.") p.36 There is a little romance, some bullying, some friendship and some trials. Susan Huff, Library Media Specialist"
"Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! is a collection of monologues (and two dialogues), portraits of medieval children and adolescents. With each character, from the lord's daughter Isobel to the shepherdess Alice to the beggar Giles, the reader learns a little bit more about life in a medieval village. This is exactly how I would have wanted to learn about this period as a student, and I picture a class of 5th or 6th graders enacting the whole book and really eating it up. The illustrations by Robert Byrd are playful but reminiscent of medieval manuscript. There's a delightful map of the author's village that includes each of the characters in miniature - it was fun to refer to the map after reading each monologue and envision them getting along in their little world."
"Reading this engaging little book in November, I was impressed, once again, with the ease of my life and the multitude of my blessings, for which I am ever more thankful.
Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! is a collection of short poems and prose giving voice to 23 young people tied to a medieval manor. Each is a soliloquy, originally intended to be recited as a class presentation about the Middle Ages. From the adventures of Hugo, the lord's nephew, to the conniving of Giles, the beggar, we get a glimpse of many facets of medieval life, and how all are interconnected. Some of the stories refer to events told by other characters, other stories stand alone. Interspersed throughout are "A Little Background" sections, which give more detail about something a character has just talked about - "Jews in Medieval Society" or "The Crusades," for example. Each entry is laced with sidebar notes, so if you're not sure what to think of a sniggler, you can easily learn how "someone who fishes for eels" makes an honorable living. The first of the delightfully stylized illustrations is a map of the manor and lands, with each character labeled and placed where his or her story is told. The characters are very well developed considering the brevity of their entries -- the entire book comprised 81 pages."
