About this title: Another collection by bestselling satiric essayist David Sedaris, author of NAKED and ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY and frequent contributor to the public radio show THIS AMERICAN LIFE. Some of the essays are in the laugh-out-loud vein to which Sedaris fans are accustomed, including an over-the-top look at Dutch Christmas traditions, and Sedaris's encounter with some lost tourists as he is drowning a mouse. But many of the works provided here, while still touched with dry humor, are more poignant pieces about his eccentric, troubled family, including observations on his mother's alcoholism, his ...

"In 22 essays, David Sedaris manages to create a unique portrait of his life. A dysfunctional family, a sex-crazed man, and a velveteen vest are all vividly seen through eyes of self-deprecation and dry humor. The charm is in the observations. In an interview with NPR's Steve Inskeep, Sedaris expresses his concern that his mind hasn't aged since adolescence. In many ways it hasn't. While the essays in Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim chronologically span through his life from childhood to adulthood, Sedaris still sees his life through a lens of childlike wonderment and honesty. It's also hilarious. This is what makes his writing shine. It's his sincerity and heart that makes this piece of creative nonfiction such a joy to read. Each member of his family, which would seem unlikable in any other context, is given life and love through Sedaris' empathy and obvious admiration. Sedaris does a great job of rounding out his characters, allowing the audience to invest in them all the more. Sedaris as a character is also one I could relate to in many different ways. Gay? Check. Self-deprecating? Check. Loves his sister, Amy Sedaris? Ahhh... check. But one needn't be or do any of these in order to appreciate David Sedaris' fresh and fanciful view of life. It's open to any and all. A sense of humor, however, is key."
"I don't ususally do audio books--I generally don't have the attention span to "just" listen to a story. But this week David's been keeping me company while I sort through years worth of former treasures and wishful thinking preparing for an upcoming move this spring. There was something poetic about him telling me about his past while I was sorting through mine. I definitely prefer the live recordings to the somewhat sterile "read by author" stuff, but Sedaris is funny no matter what. He kept me upbeat and moving, and I will always appreciate him for that more than anything. Now if he'd just hire me a moving company...."
"My first encounter with David Sedaris was the audio version of "Me Talk Pretty One Day," my second was the reading and signing at Davis-Kidd Bookseller in Nashville of "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim," and my third was reading the latter. Of the three, hearing Sedaris himself intone his own work was the most enjoyable. His cadence and emphasis ("FIRE ISLAND") are much the source of his humor.
Then again, reading "Dress Your Family" rather than hearing it strips out just enough of Sedaris' personal interpretation of his work to allow a less ironic and more touching voice through. The essays - all biographical - are arranged in a back-and-forth sort of manner that jumps from childhood to adulthood and back with no strained efforts to connect the various dots.
And that's the way it ought to be. The dots stand alone - without judgment, interpretation or context - as snapshots of Sedaris' life. His experiences are more varied than most, but the misfit mentality that permeates these stories makes me hope for a happy ending in some distant future memoir."
