"DJ Schwenk is such a likable character -- I vastly preferred reading the book to listening to it. It's easier to catch the essence of who the characters are. I feel like the audio book reader is pushing too hard with her idea of how Wisconsin folk talk. (Apparently like they're in the movie "Fargo".) But in this book, I feel like everything works. DJ is coming into her own in this book -- she's responsible, but what's more than that, she's capable and strong. She has to keep a lot of things together in this book, all the while trying to figure out what's happening between her and Brian Nelson. Nothing feels forced in this book. The realizations don't seem like they're false, and the in the moments where DJ makes decisions, she's not pushing. It's a really natural look at a really lovable girl who's learning who she is. Thought it was great!"
"I've heard some complaints that too much happens in this book to be believable, that somehow it lessens the strength of D.J.'s point of view--but I didn't find that was the case for me. I've had years like this, where each thing that happens makes the thing that was giving me so much grief before feel like child's play, and I loved the way D.J.'s growth was commensurate with the crises she was dealing with. My only quibble was that I didn't like the way everybody seemed to think D.J.'s classes and life were more expendable than anybody else's. I love D.J.'s voice a whole lot."
"4.5 stars. I haved loved the two books about the Schwenk family. The first book, Dairy Queen, followed D.J. as she tried out for the boys' football team in her high school while also taking care of her family dairy farm. This 2nd book continues the story as D.J. deals with other family problems and with her precarious social life. The characters in this family are just all so likable! :-) I think a book is successful when you come to really care about the characters. I would love to have a 3rd book about this family that goes into D.J. going to college. As with Dairy Queen, I listened to The Off Season on my iPod. I know that enhanced my enjoyment of the books because the narrator was absolutely hilarious and had just the right tone for D.J. The narrator even had a slight northern-midwest twang that was perfect for the rural Wisconsin setting."
"The day after reading Dairy Queen, I discovered there was a sequel! Oh joy to the world! I forced my husband to take me to Borders (on our way to a party for which we were already late) so I could buy it. Now, I don't just go out and buy books. A book has to be tried and tested before it takes up valuable space on my bookshelf, but I was obsessed. Also, my library didn't have the sequel and I had to have it NOW. After faking my way through an evening of conversations (I didn't want to talk to real people, I wanted to read about imaginary ones!), I finally made it home and opened the book. There she was, my homegirl, D.J. Schwenk. Oh, bliss. I stayed up late yet again and found the story to be better and worse than Dairy Queen. It was painful, yet really, really good. The ending was right on, but difficult to bear. As a result I have come up with buttloads of fanfiction ideas I will never write, but have a lot of fun thinking about. Can't wait for the third book to come out this fall!"
