"Having had a chocolate labrador as a pet, I was attracted to the book's cover. I was somewhat intrigued by the main character's decision to move to an island off the coast of Maine and that kept me reading. She had a great knack to describe the other characters in the book and with a short list of characters, it was easy for me to get to know them all very well. The black lab (not chocolate lab), was endearing and I loved the few times the author jumped out of format to write a couple chapters from the dogs point of view. Being a dog lover, I was really touched by those parts. I wasn't bothered by the main character's tendency to slip back into her profession of being a psychologist, but I thought the story line around the obsessive boyfriend of the dead woman was a bit over-the-top and it didn't really blend well or enhance the earlier direction of the book. I'd give it 2-stars, but the dog warmed me up to 3 stars!"
"Rocky's husband dies at the young age of 42 and even tho Rocky's a psychologist, she's unable to cope with his death and her inability to save him. She reinvents herself thinking it will enable her to exist without explaining her widowhood and talking about her vet husband. Escaping to a little island off the coast of Portland, Maine, Rocky takes a job as an Animal Control Warden and is befriended by her boss, a former minister. Tess, a wonderful carefree physical therapist, has synesthesia, a condition which enables her to see color and movement in numbers, letters, and days of the week becomes her friend. A young girl, already in the grip of an eating disorder, is also drawn to Rocky. In the course of her employment, Rocky discovers a dog shot with an arrow and seeks medical care for the animal and agrees to foster the dog until his owner is found, something Rocky's done in her past life. There's a mystery surrounding the dog's injury and in the process of trying to find what really happened, Rocky is rescued by this wonderful dog, Lloyd.
This is a wonderful little book which expertly channels both human and canine voices in this tale of wounded lives."
"Hmmm. For most of this book, I'd have given it two stars, but there were parts I really liked (everything with the dog) so I think it evens out to 3 stars. The biggest thing that bugged me was that way before I read the back blurb about the author, I could tell that she was a psychologist like her main character. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary getting into everyone's head, and I felt like the story drifted in spots to places it didn't need to go. The POV skipped around too much (I wish the entire thing had been done from the dog's POV, a la The Art of Racing in the Rain), was distracting, and some plot lines were left hanging at the end, purposely, I think, but I don't really understand why they needed to be there to begin with if they didn't have a resolution at some point. That said, I think I still do want to read Sheehan's second book."
"I bought the book because of the cover and a dog lover. The setting is an island of the coast of Maine and the main character, Rocky, has recently lost her husband. She runs away from the situation and her job as a college psychologist to take on the new responsibility as the animal control warden. Lloyd, a dog with an arrow in his leg, is the four-legged Cupid who heals Rocky's heart. The cover photo is enough to keep reading and looking in the pet ads for a lab to cuddle. There are a few inconsistencies with the writing, but who am I to talk; I couldn't get anything higher than a 78 in my lit class. It's a lazy, furry read, which we all need once in awhile."
