"As a techer of American literature and subjects such as ‘reding literary texts’ I found this title a great help. In one volume it comprises a comprehensive introduction to literary terms, ways of reading and discussing prose, poetry and drama, basic concepts of literary theory, as well as a very informative guide to writing about literary texts. The author’s love of his subjects pervades the whole of the book, and so does his genuine care for students. The attention to clear, well-organized instruction provides students with excellent tools for their own interpretive efforts and is always aimed at increasing rather than discouraging individual thinking and creativity in considering various aspects of the topics under discussion. Not of the least practicality, especially to someone who - like me - lives in a non-English speaking country and has limited access to primary sources, are the numerous anthologized texts. My students (who have to transfer their knowledge of literary terms from their native language into English) also find the annexed Glossary of Literary Terms (compact but not oversimplified) very useful."
