"This is a book about a smart boy named Melvin who spends a lot of time at the library. Melvin grows up with three librarians which are his very good friends. The librarians help him learn things about the library. As Melvin grows up and goes to college, he has to leave his librarian friends. Melvin still kept in touch and years later became a librarian. Melvin had such a love for books that he made it as a career! After I read this book, I wondered where the caretakers of this boy was? It never mentioned in the story. I found this story not realistic. The young boy is dumped at the library everyday. I was able to relate to this boy because a long time ago when I was in my teen years, I remember getting "dropped" off at the library every day. Now if any young kids were "dumped" at the library everyday there is most likely an adult with that child. Some libraries will not allow children under 12 at the library without an adult. It's for safety! Also, as I was reading the story, they portrayed librarians as the nicest people. Well, I have came across some librarians as mean and not helpful. I had mixed feelings about this book. The parts about the book that I liked was the young boy dedication to his books and how reading is an important skill to have in everyday life."
"Very cute book, great for elementary level. The story of a young boy who loved the library. He didn't really live there but spent much of his time there. The librarians knew him and helped him with questions from grade school until he graduated from college. Very good."
"This book has a more complex plot line then other picture books, as it is in chronological order as well in a circular plot. The passing of time can make the book feel almost too long for a short attention span. Though the time span does allows the book to do an extensive job of exploring and highlighting the parts of the library. The details would be excellent for children with autism, to help prepare them for a trip to the library and also other students to know what expectations will be there for him or her when they arrive. It might also excite them for the trip as the book's library is seen as a welcoming place that is always helping satisfying the quest for knowledge."
"I felt that this book really strove to emphasize the idea to children that a library was a place for fun, learning, and community. I think that this theme was present in many ways including the illustrations, the characters, and the dialogue. All of the illustrations were extremely detailed and showed very useful information about libraries such as the reference desk and various ways of looking up information. These things were also referenced in the dialogue of the characters which gave the book a definite educational purpose. I believe that children would indeed be drawn into this novel because of its use of vivid colors and animated, lovable characters."
