"I love Irvine Welsh, and I liked The Acid House, but it isn't his strongest work. Welsh's short story form is interesting, but he doesn't match up to Hemingway or David Sedaris in the amount he can convey in only a few pages. The stories here are dark though, and you might feel the need to shower after some of them. His portrayal of God as a bitter drunken scotsman was great, and as with any author personifying God, you get a clear picture of his outlook on the world. A good read, and if you really dig it, try and find the movie. It's a rare and very British, but I know Netflix has it."
"I've read as much of this book as I could. I'll admit I did have to skip over a few stories because of the overly excessive scottishness that made my brain sizzle but other than that it was an entertaining read. Not every story had the same effect, some didn't do anything for me but there were quite a few that shocked me. It's worth a read."
"Welsh's imagination is twisted and a bit dark, and I love him for that. However, light reading this is not...the Scottish vernacular in which every story is written makes for often laborious reading until you get the gist of what the characters are talking about. Contractions like "disnae" and "wisnae" are the easy parts to figure out, if that tells you anything.
I think someone else described the stories as hit and miss, and I agree with that. Some are excellent, some are ho hum, and some just don't add up to much...like the one with Kylie Minogue, Madonna, et al."
