"While Ironside is technically the third book in this series, it is the second book involving Kaye from Tithe. I chose not to read Valiant which is really more of a companion novel rather than sequel to Tithe. Ironside touches on some of the storyline in Valiant, but it provides enough details that you do not miss anything if you choose not to read it. If you enjoyed Tithe, you will definitely enjoy Ironside. The story is once again complex and dark and descriptions of the faerie world are vivid. The teenagers once again are edgy and largely not relatable however I wasn't as bothered this time because they were so involved in the faerie world. I was very impressed with how tastefully homosexuality was dealt with in this book. I enjoyed that Kaye never really gave up in her quest and that she is the one that continues to save Roiben. I personally wondered if Kaye had commanded Roiben to be the faerie that could do what was asked in her quest, would he have been able to. I think it would have been a bit more clever than Kaye's solution (which I saw coming)...but maybe that's just me."
"Dear Holly Black I really enjoy your books. The settings of these books make faeries seem real. The way all the places in New York are described as well as in New Jersey, make the events feel like they could have happened yesterday. They way you contrast light and dark is amazing. Most people believe that light is good and dark is bad. I am currently learning that, that isn't always true. Sometimes light could be just as evil as dark, in some other books I've read it ends up being even be more. Like in the book the "Kite Runner", some light and dark parts were hidden, where you had to read carefully or your would miss them. Like the part were Amir sees a gunfire. He saw a blast of light that didn't lead to a very good out come... I don't want to spoil so you have to find out the details of reading that on your own. In your book "ironside" light was very easy to find because of the Court names. The Seelie Court was also nicknamed " The Light Court" and the "Unseelie Court was nicknamed "The Night Court". Even though the Unseelie Court was suppose to be the hating and killing court, where all the bad faeries or evil ones were suppose to be, the Seelie court in the end, ended up being the real terror's only really feeling hate, when everything was suppose to be love..."
""In the realm of Faerie, the time has come for Roiben's coronation. Uneasy in the midst of the malevolent Unseelie Court, pixie Kaye is sure only of one thing--her love for Roiben. But when Kaye, drunk on faerie wine, declares herself to him, he sends her on a seemingly impossible quest. Now Kaye can't see or speak with Roiben unless she can find the one thing she knows doesn't exist: a faerie who can tell a lie.
Miserable and convinced she belongs nowhere, Kaye decides to tell her mother the truth-that she is a changeling left in place of the human daughter stolen long ago. Her mother's shock and horror sends Kaye back to the world of Faerie to find her human counterpart and return her to Ironside. But once back in the faerie courts, Kaye finds herself a pawn in the games of Silarial, queen of the Seelie Court. Silarial wants Roiben's throne, and she will use Kaye, and any means necessary, to get it. In this game of wits and weapons, can a pixie outplay a queen?""
"The sequel that is better than the original is a rare thing...but this one is.
Ironside is primarily about the characters from Tithe, but several cameos from Valiant are present, too.
Kaye is fiercer, Corny is...well...more pitiful and awesome at the same time. The plot is solid. The characters are believable and relatable despite the fact that we obviously can't have the same literal struggles they do (symbolism abounds here folks). And the prose is in-your-face-damnit-why-will-my-writing-never-rock-this-hard?! amazing."
