About this title: "It was the summer on Vliet Street when we all started locking our doors..." Sally O'Malley made a promise to her daddy before he died. She swore she'd look after her sister, Troo. Keep her safe. But like her Granny always said-actions speak louder than words. Now, during the summer of 1959, the girls' mother is hospitalized, their stepfather has abandoned them for a six pack, and their big sister, Nell, is too busy making out with her boyfriend to notice that Sally and Troo are on the Loose. And so is a murderer and molester. Highly imaginative Sally is pretty sure of two things. Who the ...

"This book was a quick read, but has stayed with me since I finished it about a week ago. The characters were really compelling and well developed, and the setting of a small town in the late 50's really came alive for me.
Both the protagonist, Sally, her sister Troo, as well as their friends and the adults she interacts with come to life through the eyes of ten year old Sally. Though there are some disturbing and frightening scenes in the book, the point of view of Sally's character brings innocence and sweetness to the entire story and helps the reader get through the worrisome parts.
A terrible person is on the loose in Sally's small town, and Sally is sure she knows who it is who has molested and killed at least two young girls. Though naive, Sally is determined to keep both her sister and herself safe and out the killer if she can.
Parts of the book were over the top and kept it from reaching its full potential- for instance, I thought the gay relationship in the story was overplayed and I didn't feel it added anything to the story. It could have easily been left out and the story would have stayed more focused. The scary scene toward the end of the book was also slightly unbelievable for me as well, especially the dialogue.
But I enjoyed the characters in this story and the narrator's voice a lot, so give it 4 stars. I think this will be an interesting discussion at our next book club meeting. I think we might be split on those who liked it and those who didn't. Should make for good discussion fodder!"
"This is another book that I wish I could rate ->between<- the star parameters. Perhaps half a star more for some reasons, half a star less for others.
Although much of the book was not plausible for me (whoever heard of every tragedy/crime/familial issue/sexual deviation/type of individual diversity living within what appears to be about a two block radius of each other??)(the narrator and her sister are how old? NINE and TEN??) it was still engaging and enjoyable and the perfect book to pick up and put back down while spending the last two days sick in bed and on the couch.
Sally, the narrator, was very sweet and her character traits reminded me of several qualities I had at that age - overactive imagination, love of reading, compassion in abundance, sensitive to the extreme... and although other readers tired of her continual misunderstandings of sophisticated thoughts and expressions, I thought they were endearing and consistent with innocence and youth. (St. Francis a sissy... for one.) lol! Yet, for all the innocence and youth that is described, it seemed that I often had to remind myself that the two sisters central to the story were as young as they were - none of my ten year old memories come close to touching the wealth of knowledge, language, and maturity displayed on every other page. It was somewhat unsettling at times.
The book is fun, however, and although I didn't grow up in the same decade, it did possess the power to take me back to my childhood and make me yearn for the laughter and heartache and growing pains from that period of my life."
"I would recommend this to anyone as a light, fast read. I finished it in one day. The ending was pretty out there. And, I got kind of bored with the constant "searching" for the child. But it wasn't terrible, but not terrific either.
"Lesley Kagen was born in 1949. She said she wrote this book partly to spend time again in 1959. She wanted to revisit a time in her life when things were simpler, but not as simple as they appeared to a ten year old. (It's told through the eyes of a ten year old girl whose misinterpretations of sophisticated and suggestive conversation gets old pretty fast.) Growing up in the 50s, I also enjoyed the frequent references to cultural events and artifacts that took me back to my childhood. The exotic fragrance of Evening in Paris, red and white L&M cigarette packages, icy cold aluminum drinking glasses, car-hops on roller skates, record players and Nat King Cole singing "Mona Lisa"...brought back vivid memories. However, the narrative is uneven; sometimes the plot has a contrived feel. The characters aren't deeply developed. Two deaths have occurred as the story opens, and they are more thoughtfully handled than two more deaths that occur as a part of the unfolding plot. This book is a fast read, but not a particularly engaging read."
