"listened to the book on tape on a long car ride. i learned the history of captain morgan, which was mostly interesting, and some great tidbits, like that buccaneers partnered for life in (probably) sexual relationships with other buccaneers. ... awesome."
"Really interesting history. Not just a book on piracy, the author effectively lays out the Spanish colonial system and how it given Spain tremendous power but also how it encouraged piracy and often state-sponsored privateering and how the structure of the colonies (the focus not on development/settlement of the New World, but purely on extracting as much gold/silver) made the Spanish empire vulnerable.
The author also effectively describes how Jamaica, and specifically Port Royal were critical to England's efforts to obtain a foothold in the new world and the impact of what later became of the city.
Also it is intersting to note that Morgan probably died from the results of raging alcholisim, I wonder why that does not come up in the rum companies commercials!"
"I'm having fun following the real Captain Morgan and his pirate crew on their excursions around the Caribbean back in the mid-1600's. So far they've mostly terrorized the Spanish on open water, on various islands, and at multiple locations on the "Spanish Main" (central and south america)."
"This book was chosen by another member of our book club. It is not a book I would have chosen to read which is the beauty of book club. It was an interesting book in better understanding the history of this region and it's impact on England, Spain, and the colonies, was richly woven in the story.
I give this book 3 stars because it would hold my attention, then make me fall asleep. I also found some aspects of the pirate's life and the forms of torture performed by all sides in this battle disgusting.
If you are interested in reading about the history of the lesser discussed colonies or the history of pirates, I think that you will find this an interesting read."
