"Things are looking up for Runic Esoterica at last. I have read a great deal of theorizing and speculating, and plain misinformation in the esoteric books. But the more academic ones are dry and often difficult to get a firm grasp on, or to relate to the esoteric.
This book fills the gap brilliantly. It covers the factual historical stuff while keeping brief and to the point. This makes it an easy interesting read, without compromising the important facts. It also gives you a clear perspective of how the known historical facts relate to the esoteric, giving sources and translations.
Plowright also covers the well-known authors of rune books. There are clear explanations of their methods and perspectives. He finishes with a look at well known and widely believed "facts" about runes, repeated in many rune books, & demonstrates how they arose as urban legends fairly recently.
Despite the mythbusting, the book does not discourage speculation, it merely asks us to get a grip on the known facts before going of into the fantasy realms of the many rune publications in the New Age bookstores. I heartily agree, this would have saved me a great deal of time and money reading the less reliable manuals if I had been able to get it years ago."
