About this title: In this powerful and provocative manifesto, Bill McKibben offers the biggest challenge in a generation to the prevailing view of our economy. For the first time in human history, he observes, "more" is no longer synonymous with "better" indeed, for many of us, they have become almost opposites. McKibben puts forward a new way to think about the things we buy, the food we eat, the energy we use, and the money that pays for it all. Our purchases, he says, need not be at odds with the things we truly value. McKibben's animating idea is that we need to move beyond "growth" as the paramount ...

"I get the impression that this book was written for the masses to understand. The premise is laudable and something I believe in but the content seems a bit oversimplified and alarmist in nature, which made it difficult for me to accept. But because he does such a good job in making the state of our economic future understandable, it is an excellent and accessible book. I am not a farmer, not even a gardener, but I've been eying a plot of sun-rich ground in my backyard that could do with some well-thought-out vegetable plantings next spring. And perhaps I can even create a neighborly co-op in said plot with my friends where we plant and harvest side-by-side, building community and enjoying each other's company. And I've been checking out local activities, not just Farmer's markets, but community projects that can enrich my life thus negating the need to drive to the other side of town for a theatre production or art exhibit to get a similar kind of enrichment. I've been cleaning out some of the clutter from my closet and re-purposing items I already have, looking at them with new-found eyes and figuring out how I can use them rather than buying something new and therefore being wasteful. I may not agree with the way the specifics in the book were presented, but the overall message came through and that's what's important."
"Boys and girls, this book is HOT! Simply a must read. Read it.
Our current growth-based global economy is unsustainable. But local, community-based economies have the potential to make people prosperous and happy without imperiling the biosphere or cultural/bio diversity. They're also adaptable to local conditions and democratic feedback, unlike our current system. Even better: they'll prove useful when the oil runs out!
In the course of his argument McKibben picked up on several questions I've been pondering lately (why are farmer's markets awesome despite being hip? What are the mechanics of ideology? What are the flaws in conventional economic theory? What is the gravity of China's water shortage?) and really brought them into focus. Great stuff.
The book isn't dense or complicated either -- in fact, I read it so quickly I didn't even have time to put it under "currently reading"!"
"Throughly engrossing, thought-provoking and full of great ideas about how to change your life in a world of globilization, Bill McKibben's book might just be in my Top Ten Life-Changing Books of all time. His thesis is simple: consume less, buy local (grow your own if you can), become part of a community and live with Thoreavian purpose. He describes with frightening clarity how large corporations and the government have destroyed the little guy and stripped us of what makes our lives most meaningful...each other. The book can drag at times, especially when he spends a chapter on a topic you're not really interested in, but his ideas never become any less dynamic. With excellent ideas about getting it all back, ranging from cooperative green energy to community gardens, McKibben's is a book that might just change the world, using you as his agent of change."
"Very good book. It puts together and links multiple topics that usually stand alone in one book (ie Omnivores dillema, Small is beautiful). Makes the point that the majority of the world is driven by large scale economics, growth and one size fits all solutions. He questions this and feels it is important to incorporate the happiness of populations as a measure of how the world is progressing. Claims that people are "hyper individuals" and that through reforming communites people can lead lives that are happier and less harmful to the world.
