"Georgina Kincaid is a succubus. However, for someone who steals life energy from men by having sex with them, she has a terrible social life. She just can't carry on a meaningful relationship with anyone. So what happens when she has not one but two suiters? Who will she pick?
I enjoyed the world that Richelle Mead has built. I like the main character. I thought the story was good. I like the banter and dialog. If only the writing were a bit stronger. I just didn't find the style very engaging or interesting. I'll certainly read the rest of the series as I really like Georgina and am interested to see where it will go."
"I was very taken with Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series, so I thought I would try out her other series. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was an even bigger fan of her other series. This is the first book of the Georgina Kincaid series, which deals with an immortal succubus (Georgina), who job is to steal the life energy from men's souls by seducing them. Georgina tries to maintain the semblance of a human life, working in a bookstore and concealing her succubus identity. But the tragic premise of her story is that she cannot control her stealing of life energy, so she can never be intimate with someone without harming him, which obviously throws wrenches in her love life. When she meets Seth Mortensen, the author that she's had a huge fan-crush on from afar, and Roman, a mysterious and romantic professor, her life gets complicated fast as she juggles their affections and he own insecurities.
The author paints a deliciously absurd world based on the Heaven/Hell mythology, where the machinations of Hell are run as a massive, hierarchical, corporate bureaucracy, and decisions about what kinds of evil actions to take are often based on what will incur the least paperwork. Georgina's boss, Jerome, is an archdemon running Hell's operations in the Seattle area. Her friends (and colleagues) include two vampires and an imp (who brokers souls for Hell). Her boss is best buddies with Carter, a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, disheveled angel.
The book is a fun, light rush with a lot of wry humor. Georgina is a remarkably sympathatic protagonist (for a minion of Hell), who loves her Nine Inch Nails, vodka gimlets, and her designer shoes, and is remarkably insecure and jealous fora professional seductress. The author manages to invoke a lot of empathy for her (e.g., as she gradually unveils the story of how Georgina sold her soul to Hell). This book is an interesting cross between genres, as it blends supernatural/fantasy elements with a romance story, as well as a whodunit. Very addictive."
"I couldn't finish, or even get very far. This is the "Twilight" of succubus books, and I mean that in the worst way. It takes a dark, gothic, typically creature, then makes it annoyingly preppy and impossible to take seriously, with an overly simplistic plot and a boringly casual writing style, and is widely loved by teenage girls who, more often than not, don't know much about the original creature in the first place.
Do you listen to bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, and like the seductive, wicked, demonic succubi they sing about? Do you play games like "Diablo," and like the succubi they feature? Then "Succubus Blues" is not for you. Indeed, the only time a traditional succubus is even featured is the very beginning, in which Georgina embarressedly transforms herself into such a form on a commission. She loaths this form; apparently, so should the reader, even though picking up a book about succubi means that's probably what they're hoping for. The sex is off-screen, so if you were expecting a hot succubus sex scene, it is not here.
"Succubus Blues" has a succubus protagonist named Georgina Kincaid. That tells you all you need to know right there. To me, the idea of ANY character with such a ridiculous name--especially a succubus character!--is an instant turn off, and if you don't like the name, you probably won't like the book, either. Georgina writes to the reader in a first-person, informal perspective through which she feeds them information about the world, rather than showing it. Though there's talk about soul-selling and hell and what not, it's never dark, never menacing, never wicked. The "evil" characters are more annoying than anything. And yet, despite this apparent lightheartedness, the book is NOT funny. It's like it's trying to get that whole "Catcher in the Rye" vibe, except it isn't witty. It's just "cute," but with succubi I don't want cute, I want dark and sexy and awesome. This book is none of these things.
Georgina spends a lot of time describing her changing clothes and appearances, and unless you agree with her aesthetic taste, it's a further turn off. I'll be blunt: I'm a goth. I'm not generally attracted to girls who wear lipgloss and crocodile-skin jackets. Yet she seems so into how "killer" her outfits are. Okaaay, I try not to detract it from a book if something's not really my taste, but again, I'm expecting to read about SUCCUBI here. I want hot demon women with wings, black leather, and a sexual hunger that, no matter how much they want love, they are compelled to at least consider. Now, again, I did not finish this book; but Georgina just seemed like such a typical, boring human woman in the parts that I DID read.
I wouldn't bash this book so much for taking this cuter look at succubi and what not, were it not for the drought of succubus fiction on the market. There just isn't a lot out there, and most of it is pretty bad, and I don't like that this is how many people are being introduced to the creatures. Was the book exceptionally well written, or as funny as it seems to think it is, I might not be so turned off. As it is, I was bored, irritated, and completely apathetic to what was happening."
