"Well. I have now read Watchmen, the graphic novel, and Watchman, the spy novel that I think was by Ian Rankin, and now I have read The Watchman. Naturally, I will have to search for a book called Watchdog.
I wish the New York Times would describe me as taut and muscular, but I guess I will have to settle for reading books that merit that description. (I suppose today's fifteen minutes of yardwork were not enough.)
I enjoyed this book very much. It moves fast, and Pike and Cole are well-developed characters. The heiress, Larkin Barkley, was not as interesting, but she is a new character, and I thought she was pretty well-rounded by the end. (I didn't like her name, though. I kept thinking of her as LarkBark.)
I like Elvis Cole, and I REALLY like Joe Pike. Thank goodness my friend Jan has given me more Robert Crais books."
"The Watchman reminded me of Lee Child's series with Jack Reacher and I had no trouble at all picturing Vin Diesel playing Joe Pike. I'll definitely be looking for more books by this author, including his Elvis Cole series.
Joe Pike is an ex-; ex-cop, ex-Marine, ex-mercenary and watches a billion dollar spoiled rich girl as a "favor" and finds that keeping her safe is not as easy as it looks. A "leak" is discovered and Pike disappears with his charge and uses all his skill and honed knowledge to expose the lies and betrayals."
"The Watchman was an excellent book written by a skilled hand. The first in a series focusing on Joe Pike, a familiar character for Crais; this book was easily read as a stand-alone novel. Joe Pike has been hired to do one thing: protect Larkin Connor Barkley. Larkin was in a car accident and after identifying the people who fled the scene, numerous attempts were made on her life. When the government couldn't keep her safe, Pike was brought in by an old friend to do their job. Soon, Joe and Larkin fall off the radar while running their own investigation to determine why Larkin is being targeted. With killers and feds hunting them down at every turn, the answers have to be found quickly or death will come knocking. I was very impressed with this book. I knew that this book was a spin-off series from Crais' Elvis Cole series and I was a bit apprehensive to read it without knowing the character history. I was quickly proven wrong. Crais did a wonderful job of informing the reader of the nature of the main characters without overpowering the story with countless details. Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are both intriguing people and I look forward to reading about their past adventures to discover more about the nature of their relationship. I also enjoyed Larkin's character. She was a bit difficult to like in the beginning but she masterfully changed throughout the book into a likable girl. I loved the tension between Larkin and Joe. I thought their characters suited each other to perfection and I was impressed with how they evolved into strong friends. Their closeness was palpable without being forced into intimacy. The story was suspenseful and the action moved along at a consistent pace. It was never left lagging even when details were being fleshed out. This was a thinking reader's book and it was right up my alley. I would have given it 4.5 stars if I could have. I will definitely be reading more of Crais' Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series."
"Similar to "L.A. Requiem", Crais moves Joe Pike to the fore-front of this tale. Very intense, and like all of the later Elvis Cole books, "The Watchman" is quite dark and reveals much more of the pysche behind Pike. This whole series is amazing in terms of character development, Pike's in particular. When the series started, he was pretty much a slient, sunglass wearing action movie-tough guy cliche that kicked ass when Elvis got in trouble. Over the last few novels however, particularly "L.A. Requiem", "The Last Detective", "The Watchman" we learn more of his background, and why he is the way he is. Hell, we even learn why he wears the sunglasses round the clock, which is worth the price of the book alone."
