"This was just OK. I loved his first book "the memory of running", so I was dissapointed with this book, it didn't even seam like the same writting style"
"The second book of McLarty's I've read (in addition to The Memory of Running, which was just as good). I like his style quite a bit and his stories always have interesting characters. The book is definitely more character-driven than plot driven, although this one has a more active plot than the last. A quick read, worth the time, very entertaining."
"This is the second book by McLarty that I've read and I am worried that he can only write by alternating chapters between the past and the present. I stayed up nights totally drawn in to this book, only to be kind of disappointed with the ending and left with the desire to rip the last chapter right out of the book because I have no idea what it is doing in there."
"This book was given to me by a friend, who had decided not to read it. It is the story of Jono Riley, a two-bit stage, and some-time bit part TV/commercial actor and bartender, who returns to his childhood home of East Providence, RI, after the death of a childhood crush. The story alternates between present and past, which I found a bit distracting and hard to follow (chapter titles could have easily cleaned this up). The book evolves into a mystery around several unsolved death's that occurred during Jono's teen years.
The mystery and return of many of the old friends and former high school bullies (now mobsters) provide some suspense and complexity, but I found some of the characters extraneous (the priest who disappeared) and related resolutions somewhat predictable.
Nonetheless, McLarty's prose is easy to read, and it was overall an enjoyable story."
