"Geeze, I have been flying through books lately! My husband has been super busy with school and I have been slightly less motivated than normal to go to the gym some nights (because he is too busy) so that means lots of reading time in the evenings. :)
I am a little sad this is the last book in the shopaholic series...I really feel like more could be written, though I do feel that this is a good stopping point as well. While the book is obviously still hilariously funny at times, this book is definitely the most "serious" as Rebecca and Luke are dealing with money issues, work issues, and their marriage; with a baby on the way to boot!
Becky is a hilarious mom/mom-to-be and of course goes over the top in many of her baby shopping adventures. In the end she starts to have a little bit of a revelation and returns somethings...though the book end with her being typically Becky and buying something she doesn't need. Showing that people can learn, but deep down they don't change too much.
"It's okay.....maybe. Yes, there is a sense of hesitation. After reading all of the Shopaholic books, this latest installment of the series is definitely the most 'dramatic'. I even wonder if Ms. Kinsella wrote this when she was with child because the book is oozing with hormones, so to speak. Therefore, I cannot fully commit to saying that I like it because the book failed to bring me the same old Becky Bloomwood-Brandon antics and humor. For example, I could not find a single witty Shopaholic statement that I would normally find in Kinsella's novels. Becky's shopping 'mis'adventures have lessened and her enthusiasm for shopping for baby stuff seems pretty 'normal' for a pregnant person, whereas I was looking for something over the top! Granted there was a whole chapter on Prams' shopping (or strollers as we call them here in the U.S.), and Becky ends up buying three, but the chapter, although it was a manifestation that Becky hasn't lost her Shopaholic touch, was really not that interesting. However, even though the book lacked the same dose of Becky Bloomwood funny and witty mishaps, the difference in the flavor compared to the the other Shopaholic novels isn't all that bad. There were a dramatic plots, LOTS of it in fact....such as 'Is Luke and Venetia having an affair?', 'What is the secret that is going on in Brandon Communications?', 'Will they lose the house?', 'Is Jess going to Peru, if she does, what happens to Tom?'. The page-turner is definitely the supposed 'affair' of Venetia and Luke, and I must confess that during this portion of the book I was actually quite moved just imagining how painful it must be to be in such a delicate state and finding out your husband is committing adultery. I am sure every reader is at the edge of their seats too wondering if tragedy is how Ms. Shopaholic's story is going to end. The culmination is pretty good. Ms. Kinsella proves once again that Becky and Luke's love is stronger than ever. However it is not a perfect ending. As Ms. Kinsella resolves each one conflict, the ending result is somewhat turning out to be like a Rocky Balboa movie. Brandon Communications is severly hemorrhaging money and thus the Brandons lose the opportunity to buy their dream home and end up living momentarily with Becky's parents by the time the baby was born. If Kinsella decided to end the Shopaholic series with this book then that would be fine. There really isn't much more to develop in Becky's story. Ms. Kinsella has reinforced her 'shopaholic' nature time and again with every place she has visited or every new experience she encounters. Her romance with Luke has been tested and it was proven to be quite solid. And all the other characters in the story, like Becky's parents, Suze, Jess (who is moving for a short time to Chile with Tom), and even Danny (who I still do not like and can never comprehend how he became a famous and most sought after fashion designer when he specializes in 't-shirts'!) have all been fairly developed. The series should end with this book."
"I read all 5 of these books in a week or two as I slowly recovered from extreme sleep deprivation during summer school teaching. I did not enjoy predicting how stupid actions of the protagonist would land her in trouble down the road. As this is the last book in the series maybe I had become numb to it or Kinsella telegraphed it less or her editor got better, who knows. I enjoyed this book the best out of the series because I actually laughed outloud once or twice. My favourite moment was very minor SPOILER ALERT
when her evil ice queen mother-in-law visited her while she was pregnant. Our heroine had a particularly trying day so when the ice queen asked her what they were planning to name their baby I had to laugh when she supplied "Armageddon for a boy or Pomegranate for a girl"
All of these books are extremely predictable and I recommend them only if one is feeling really really braindead. If this is the height of chick-lit I am not a fan. I read one or two books by Diana Young and their covers and content certainly suggested chicklit but the tension, plot and characterization was much better."
"This one starts out slow and aggravating -- as Becky Bloomwood so often does. I find the series slightly more annoying now that she's rich and her shopping affliction is less a real problem and more of just a pesky bad habit which her husband can constantly bail her out of. Oh hardy har har, Becky can't possibly choose just one stroller so she buys four uber-strollers when the rest of us struggle to afford one mediocre one that we can make do with. And for some reason, her marriage and relationship with her husband have always seemed a bit awkward to me. He's supposed to be this fantastically rich and intelligent entrepreneur, but yet he has the relationship smarts of a banana slug.
But before I knew it this one had me hooked just like all the rest! By about the halfway point I couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting. I even found myself laughing out loud at some points. If you're a fan of the series, this one is another fun read, although Kinsella has still never been able to recapture the charm of the original book. I don't so much *like* Becky anymore, as I just feel a bit sorry for her and hope things work out for her in the end. This installment is not perfect, by any means, but if you've made it this far with the series, it's still a good diversion for some light-hearted, purely frivolous reading."
