"NorthBarry Laverty, MD, can barely find the village of Ballybucklebo on a map when he first sets out to seek gainful employment there, but already he knows that there is nowhere he would rather live than in the emerald hills and dales of Northern Ireland. The proud owner of a spanking-new medical degree, Barry jumps at the chance to secure a position as an assistant in a small rural practice. At least until he meets Dr. Fingal Flahertie OReilly. The older physician, whose motto is never let the patients get the upper hand, has his own way of doing things, which definitely takes some getting used to. At first, Barry can't decide if the pugnacious O'Reilly is the biggest charlatan he has ever met, or possibly the best teacher he could ever hope for. Ballybucklebo is a long way from Belfast, and Barry soon discovers that he still has a lot to learn about country life. But if he sticks with it, he just might end up finding out more about life and love than he could ever have imagined back in medical school. this book was absolutely wonderful! It was humorous, and touching, and Dr. O'Riley is fantastically funny and great. I am reading the second book right now."
"I really enjoyed reading it. If you like the James Herriott novels, you'll like this. If you like reading about interesting characters in rural Ireland, you'll like this. It's set during the 1960s but sometimes it seems more like the 1020s, and it strikes me that this is a great companion novel to read with The Help (Kathryn Stocket, FIVE STARS) which is set in the same time period, but in Jackson, Mississippi instead of a small town outside of Belfast. I'm glad to know that there's a sequel for me to read next!"
"This is a great opportunity to view the orange world of Northern Ireland thru the eyes of a new general practicioner, who takes a position in an Irish country village. Despite the huge character of the great Dr. O'Reilly, whom the young doctor becomes an assistant to, there is a story here. However, by about half way thru, there is a blaring need for subplot to appear and lessen the intensity of this drama. The story becomes slightly cyclical and predictable by the last quarter. However, the characters are loveable and endearing people whom you might expect to bump into at the local pub or market in an Irish country village. The sequel to this book has just been released and I will be interested to see if there is more substance to that story."
"I just finished An Irish Country Doctor and it was quite an enjoyable read. What could appeal to me more than a book about a doctor in Ireland? I really loved how the main character was a doc right out of school and the book explored how he dealt with older docs cutting the corners, building the trust of rural patients, and establishing how he's going going to practice medicine. While I'm making it sound heavy, it's really not, I just really related to the book. If you're looking for a quick enjoyable read, I'd definitely check this one out. It's by Patrick Taylor, a doctor himself."
