About this title: The greatest 'unsolved mystery' of the American Southwest relates to the Anasazi, the native peoples who in the 11th century converged on Chaco Canyon (now New Mexico) and built a flourishing cultural center that attracted pilgrims from far and wide, a vital crossroads of the prehistoric world. The Anasazis' accomplishments - in agriculture, in art, in commerce, in architecture and engineering - were astounding, rivaling those of the Mayans in distant Central America. By the 13th century, however, the Anasazi were gone from Chaco. Vanished. What was it - drought? pestilence? war? forced ...

"At time this book can be a bit wordy, but it's well worth it. Craig takes a subject he is obviously very passionate about and weaves a beautiful narrative of a lost civilization through the land in which they lived. I really enjoyed the geographical links he creates as he traces the history of the Anasazi. It is a good reminder that the physical world we live in shapes our destiny as a civilization."
"Such beautiful writing! Detailed examination from a devoted desert-walker's perspective of who were the cliff dwellers and where did they go. Lyrical writing about the desert, life, desert people. Wonderful book!"
"The author walks across a good portion of the Southwest, searching out the ebb and flow the ancient people probably took as nature, weather, political situations and who knows what else changed. He finally follows them down to Mexico and makes the very interesting point that most American archeologists/anthropologist think of ancient American as stopping at the border when of course ancient peoples had no such idea.
At times, he takes his wife and infant with him and they all camp out, climb through canyons, hunt down cliff dwellings and watch the sun rise - or set - as the ancient people would have.
I love learning about these lands and the varied - even ethnically varied - people who lived there. The fact is, none of the Americas were empty and you could argue that the civilizations that flourished here in the U.S. were as complex as any the world has produced. Including our own. Also of course there is the mystery of the Anastazi. Not why they disappeared. They didn't. Not anymore then the Maya did. But why did they build those great roads and leave building complexes like Chaco and so on. Fascinating."
