"Mercy Thompson #2: Blood Bound, by Patricia Briggs
Owing a vampire a favor can be a very dangerous thing, as Mercy is about to find out in this sequel to "Moon Called."
Stefan comes to Mercy in the middle of the night, needing the special defense against magic that being a walker provides to her. He is going to meet with another vampire, but fears that the other vampire may be able to manipulate his memories. Stefan's fears turn out to be right, leaving Mercy the sole witness to a dangerous bloodbath. The other vampire turns out to be a sorcerer - a magic user possessed by a demon. And he's been busy killing.
Though Stefan and the werewolves tell Mercy to stay out of it, she knows she can't. Especially not when one of her favorite werewolves, Warren, is severely wounded by the sorcerer. But how can one little coyote face off against a demon-vampire?
In the second book of the Mercy Thompson series, Briggs introduces us more thoroughly to vampires. Her vampires are much like those of legend - they can't go out in the light and sleep during the day, some have superpowers, and they can be killed by using a stake and burning the body. But Briggs' vampires also keep menageries - humans that have willingly agreed to be vampire food. Stefan is probably the most atypical vampire - he drives a van painted like the Scooby Doo van and is kind to his menagerie; he's experimenting to find how vampire blood can help blood-borne illnesses. But the rest of them...well, I'd be scared to meet them in full daylight, let alone in the dark.
"Blood Bound" fleshes out more of Briggs' supernatural world populated with werewolves, vampires, fae, and more. I didn't think it was quite as captivating as "Moon Called," but it was still a very solid book, with lots of action and an intriguing plot that will keep you reading. I'm a little over-saturated with vampires, that may be why I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the first book. But don't let that keep you from picking this up, as the story in "Blood Bound" will keep you bound to the pages."
"Finally after months of waiting my library called and told me this book was in. Yay!
Stefan, a vampire, calls in a favor that Mercy owes him. In her coyote form she goes with Stefan to investigate a hotel. Once there a terrible vampire murders a girl and alters Stefans memories leaving Stefan to believe he killed her. Only because the evil vampire didn't know what Mercy was , Mercy survives and her Walker powers that makes her impervious to some vampire magic leaves her memories untouched. To protect Stefan from being accused of the murder she testifies at the Vampire seeth trial. Stefan is appointed to investigate the matter further and several of Mercy werewolf friends join him. When thehunt doesn't go as planned it is up to Mercy to save her friends. Also at the heart of the story is Mercy's confused feelings for werewolves Samuel and Adam.
I had read the other three in the series already. I loved this book. The world Briggs has created is so fun to visit. Stefan is one of my favorite characters, maybe because he is a mystery and dangerous while still being a good friend. I wasn't surprised to find out he has feelings for Mercy (it was hinted at in Moon Called) but I was shocked at how far he'd go to protect her. Mercy can't keep herself out of trouble, not if it means letting her friends get into danger. She balances very precariously between the worlds of the vampires, werewolves and fae."
"Now that Mercedes (Mercy) Thompson had the werewolves public figure head (Adam Hauptman) as a neighbor, Dr. Samuel Cornick as a roommate and the oddly kind vampire (Stephan Uccello) as a kind of friend and her, with limited abilities other than being a 'walker' that shape shifts to be a coyote, what could she do about all the dominant men in her life. When the volume of violence started to increase in the area even her cop friend Tony came to Mercy to ask for help and advice. Having the mistress of the local vampire seethe ask for help even though they knew all the trouble was caused by an out of control sorcerer that had been turned to vampire (making it the vampires problem) that had the ability to control werewolves and vampires alike, left Mercy wondering what else there was about her that no one was telling her. Anyone could see that being immune to most of the magical control that a vampire has might help her defeat this monster, but what would being able to talk to ghosts help.
Book 2 ..... I thought it was over and then I read the last couple of chapters. They weren't entirely necessary, but it did wrap things up for this story nicely before going to the next. Mercy is quite a unique character. Yet her cast of friends are even better. To have a story that has so many dominant, strong and controlling men yet have the women be the 'weakest' player and still be able to hold them all together. This character is written in a way that makes her sensible in the a way that attracts the men and the reader to her. This character never takes anything away from any of them either, she may be stuck in the middle of them all but she shows respect to each and yet she is the strongest character. I like that, I just with she would decide. On to the next of the series (Iron Kissed), but there is also the related series (World of Marrok - the werewolves) that I think I want to read also, I will have to figure out which one to get next, but I am enjoying this series and want more of it."
"After a strong first book, Mercy comes back full force in Blood Bound. This time instead of a rogue Werewolf, we have a rogue Vampire. Moon Called was a great intro to the Tricities underworld and brought us deep in to the world of Werewolves but this time, we are taken in to the world of Vampires. Mercy is nearly immune to magic and due to this gift, Stefan asks her to join him in visiting a vampire who is new in town and has visited the Seethe and Stefan knows something isn't right and asks Mercy to stay in Coyote form. This creepy new vampire is one scary creature, a sorcerer turned Vampire and being ridden by a demon is a bad combination. Every where he goes, evil follows. He can over power Vampires, werewolves, fae and the witches. Not a good combination.
Mercy gets asked by Marsilia, the vampire head, to help after Warren (I love him! I hope he gets more focus in the coming books) is nearly killed and a weaker vampire was also killed. Mercy also learns more about what being a walker is. I don't want to share anymore details as I don't want to spoil the plot but I loved Blood Bound. It was strong, Mercy was strong and I felt my adrenaline rush. Also, I have to throw this in, when the Demon/Vamp/Sorceror thingy finds out who and what Mercy is and finds her at her trailer, that was a scary scene. I could visualize his face pressed against her window and his fangs scratching the glass, and could hear him destroying her trailer and shredding it. Ouch.
Either ways, I can't wait for more. I have Iron Kissed coming which is #3. I have a feeling that one will have the focus on the Faes. Once again, another two thumbs up to Patricia Briggs. She has created an awesome heroine, strong, independent and a positive influence amongst all the dominant/submissive play of the weres."
