"This is Caribbean version of Cinderella told through the perspective of Cendrillon's godmother. I really liked this version and feel like what it added worked well and what stayed the same from the Grimm version that I am comparing it to worked well. It has a very authentic Caribbean touch, but I think my favorite part is that it is told through the perspective of someone that lived through it with Cendrillon. As the godmother let the reader know a few times; she was there. I also liked how in this version none of the illustrations of the characters seemed like caricatures. Usually the stepmother and stepsisters (though in this version there is only one half sister) seem to have outrageous appearances. These illustrations are very authentic to people and places. It would be a great version to use in a classroom on its own or to compare/contrast to other versions."
"This Cinderella story is told from the perspective of the godmother, who is a washerwoman. Cendrillon grows up on an island in the Caribbean Sea. When she was a baby, her mother was very sick, and the washerwoman helped to nurse her. Cendrillon's mother named the washerwoman as Cendrillon's godmother because of her kindness.
When Cendrillon's father remarries, his new wife puts Cendrillon to work. She is forced to do all of the washing and scrubbing. When it is announced that there will be a ball Cenderillon wants to go very badly, but her step mother will not allow it. She asks her godmother for help. The godmother makes all of Cenderillon's dreams come true! She goes to the ball and even dances with Paul, the son of a very important family. Cenderillon has so much fun, she almost forgets that she has to leave before midnight! She ends up leaving one of her beautiful pink slippers behind.
The next day, Cenderillon is sad. She had so much fun at the ball, and thought surely she would never feel that happy ever again........... but, as we know, sometimes things have a way of working out!"
"This version of Cinderella is told from the perspective of a Caribbean fairy godmother. This poor washerwoman's one main passion and love is her goddaughter Cendrillon. Cendrillon becomes heartbroken over a rich man, but with her godmother determination and magical wand that was left for her, she is able to give Cendrillion the gift of a life changing love.
I really enjoyed reading this Caribean version of Cinderella. It was written with romance and passion, truly capturing my attention. I though it was very neat to be written in through the eyes of the godmother. I could feel her love and determination to create a happy life for Cendrillon. The illustrations in this story are beautiful and tell a story beyond the text. I liked how this version kept many of the same traditional parts of Cinderella but changed it to the Caribean culture and words. I would recommend reading this book to children for an extra insight to a wonderful and magical version of Cinderella."
"This story is a version on Cinderella that is based on the French Creole tale "Cendrillion". This version is told from the viewpoint of the "fairy" godmother, and the change in point of view offers new insights into the tale. After visiting New Orleans, I became interested in the Creole and Cajun cultures, so this book seemed like a perfect fit. This story easily crossed cultures, and the author did a nice jon of weaving in elements that made the story more true to its revised setting. Both the godmother and Cendrillion were washerwoman, and there were many allusions to the French culture and its aura of power and success. The horses and footmen were created out of brown lizards and agoutis, a Carribean rodent, and helped to make the transition. The magic of the tale and the happy ending shined through and made this version a nice read."
