About this title: While defending a mind-numbingly dull theft charge, Rumpole finds that the new terrorist laws have hamstrung his beloved courts. Meanwhile, a Pakistani doctor has been imprisoned without charge or trial under suspicion of aiding al-Qaeda in its plans for a terrorist attack. With the doctors wife begging him to help her husband, the Great Defender is determined to bring the case before a jury. Trouble is also brewing at home as Hilda, She Who Must Be Obeyed, sits down to write her own memoirs describing her view of Rumpole and her own love life. Rumpoles battle on the home front threatens to ...

"Ya either love Rumpole or hate him... if you're a fan of the BBC series you'll enjoy the book. It is a brief (pun intended) adventure that poses new questions about SWMBO's character (She Who Must Be Obeyed). As a mystery I found it rather thin - I had speculatively solved it about halfway through. The wrapup at the end was more Perry Mason-esque that I would have expected. There was at least a couple of laugh-out-loud moments, hard for this jaded old reader to come by, and for those I was sincerely grateful. I finished it in a day and came away with the same feeling I get after eating puffed rice... there was a lot of chewing but not much substance. I'm spoiled by PD James, perhaps. Rumpole's best moment was his ongoing denunciation of the subduction of civil liberties in the wake of the London Tube bombings. I'm not familiar enough with England's legal establishment to know if these draconian measures have been reversed, but I hope one day the rule of law (and habeas corpus) will return to stay.
My rule of thumb is A) Keep this book and guard it jealously; B) Share with a trusted friend whom I believe will return it to me; or C) Donate this book to the thrift store. This one I label a "B", as I intend to share it with my Rumpole-reading brother..."
"I have always liked the Rumpole short stories, but I find that he wears a little thin in the novel format. Still, a good story, reasonable plotted, and with all the usual Rumpole supporting characters, including She Who Must be Obeyed, the incredible Timson clan, and a variety of other members of the bar. Enjoyable, but not one of Mortimers best"
"The last Rumpole mystery by John Mortimer before his death. Rumpole defends a Pakistani terrorist. Rumpole doesn't disappoint. One of my favorite mystery series."
