"The Dark Is Rising is my first review on GoodReads, simply because it deserves to be. I can look back over more than 20 years of an insatiable hunger for the written word, and in the misty distance shine these books that started it all for me. That's not to say I didn't read before Susan Cooper, but I had never been so emotionally tethered to a story. In the person of Will Stanton, and his suddenly fierce friendship with Bran Davies, there remain to this day notes that resonate for me. Together they and the Drew kids endure courage and fear, loss and triumph, horror and beauty. Every day I spent as a boy reading these pages was filled with a wonder and a desire for the world to be as magical and mysterious as Will's world. And when the story drew to a close, I remember vividly the very real loneliness of knowing that I would never again follow these friends into a new story. But there was delight, too, from a truly wonderful story never to be forgotten. My own years go by and too many things change, but I still come back to these stories again, over and over. I've read them aloud to my first child. I can't wait to read them aloud again to my two younger children, as much to revisit the fictional friends who anchor me to the wonder and magic of youth as to share that magic with my daughters and son."
"Susan Cooper's masterful series is a must-read for any young reader who breezed through Harry Potter and is hungry for more. This modern fable with arthurian themes follows the battle between those of the Light and those of the Dark. Her stories often point to how seemingly small people make a big difference in the course of the whole world, and also point out how small things can have great meaning. I love to pull out the second in the series, titled The Dark is Rising , at Christmas time and reread it, since it is set right at Christmas. And the carol "Good King Wenceslas" became one of my favorites as a preteen because of how it is featured in that story."
"A handful of English children are sent to live with their eccentric uncle in a big and mysterious house. One rainy day, the children decide to explore the house. And behind a wardrobe, the Pevensies... oh, wait. These aren't the Pevensies, they're the Drews.
It's strange to me no one seems to comment on how completely derivative the opening to Over Sea, Under Stone is.
Anyway, these books are fine. I enjoyed them. But I have to say that I think touting these as unsung Harry Potters is not appropriate. The Potter books have 10 times more substance than these.
I stopped to wonder if maybe I had found these Dark is Rising books as a kid, I would think they were as great as Harry Potter. But then, I read Harry Potter as an adult too, so that doesn't really seem relevant after all."
"I really enjoyed this series. Books 1 and 3 are the weakest because the stories with the "kids" just don't quite work. But the other 3 volumes with Will and Bran are a compelling read. Suggested for any fans of mythology and Arthurian legends.
I DID NOT watch the movie because the previews showed how little they had followed the book. Will Stanton is not a "reluctant" superhero. He is the last of an ancient race who comes into the knowledge of who he is on his 14th birthday. But, no more without telling too much!"
