I was going through a war book phase and Read a lot of books based off of great video games, Ghost Recon, EndWar...Then I read Contact Harvest and thought this series has the most potential of any I have ever read. Then I bought THe Fall of Reach. I fell Madly in love! John 117(Master Chief((The Main Character)) ) has become my IDOL. Not in the creepy way, but John inspired me... Never mind just read the book."
"This book doesn't really need a review does it? I needed something kind of light to decompress between chapters of Revolutionary Road and this one hit the spot. There's nothing really special about Halo sci-fi. In fact, there's nothing really that interesting about the Halo universe in general...that is except for the fact that the Master Chief is a bad ass. This book is a prequel to the games and tells a little bit of the origins of the Chief and his fellow Spartan super soldiers, and why exactly it is that by the start of the game he's the only one left. Decent entertainment."
"Halo: The Fall of Reach, by Eric Nylund, follows the chronicles of several super-soldiers as they try to defend humanity from the onslaught of a vast alien empire known as the Covenant. The soldiers, officially referred to as Spartans, are given the impossible task of defending the human planet of Reach from a numerically and technologically superior army. Among the Spartans is Master Chief, or SPARTAN-117, the central protagonist of the story, whose mission goes far beyond simply trying to win a battle. The supporting characters include the thirty other Spartans enlisted to defend Reach alongside the other human defenders. Meanwhile, the main antagonist is the Covenant, which seeks to destroy humanity, while their true motives throughout the plot remain unknown. Halo: The Fall of Reach is primarily a science fiction novel which deals with humanity in the 26th century and their struggle against the genocidal Covenant. I chose the book after playing the Xbox game Halo: Combat Evolved, which the book itself was based off of, and I wanted to delve deeper into the overall plot and discover what else the Halo universe had to offer. It also added depth to the plot as a whole and insight as to how the war began. The central conflict in the story is Man vs. Supernatural, as it pits humanity in a brutal war against an unknown extraterrestrial threat. However, in the lesser scheme of things, the conflict of Man vs. Self is shown, as the Spartans' inner strength is shown and their will to survive is constantly tested. One of the key themes in the novel is self-sacrifice, as many Spartans take massive risks for the greater good of humanity often with the cost of their lives. The most prominent symbol throughout the book is the Master Chief himself. He represents humanity's will to survive even in the face of great danger. He also exhibits strong self-determination as he progresses, rather than blindly following the orders of his superiors, he makes decisions based on the moment, which proves to save the lives of his fellow soldiers. Although the Master Chief undoubtedly knows how to fight any enemy in any situation, he begins to learn why he is fighting, representing humanity's natural curiosity and willingness to learn. The greatest motif that is present in the book is death. Even though the defenders of Reach fight vigorously against the invaders, everyone on the planet suffers the same inevitable fate of death. The book makes frequent references to the corpses of Reach's protectors, and depicts death as a final peace granted to the war-weary soldiers. The author makes use of transition to switch back and forth between the fast-paced Battle of Reach where most of the Spartans fought, and the more covert operations that were undertaken by the Master Chief alone. The author's tone is notably solemn, however it becomes increasingly desperate as humanity begins to falter. The writing style of the author is very descriptive and uses many scientific terms which fit in with the science fiction genre. His characterization of the Spartans is different in that he doesn't fully explain their physical appearances and leaves more to the imagination. The conversation between the characters also matches the author's somber tone and their personalities are described more by their physical actions rather than their dialogue. Overall, I thought that Halo: The Fall of Reach was an excellent book, as it was able to flesh out the plot of the Halo series which is something the game wasn't able to do. I feel that the plot was different compared to other science fiction books in that it was able to show the more human side of the story in detail. The story nevertheless had the feel of an epic, as the Master Chief was a character who was able to accomplish colossal feats and fight through impossible odds. I highly recommend the book to anyone that has played any Halo game as it delves deeper into the plot and gives background to the series as a whole. I would recommend it to others even if they have not played the game, as it still covers the story that takes place in the games and so nothing is left out of plot. I would not recommend it to anyone that doesn't like science fiction or epics as the book contains many elements of both. In the end, Halo: The Fall of Reach was a great read and I am eager to read the rest of the books in the series."
"Surprisingly entertaining. I'm always skeptical about things that are based off of video games...even if the video game is good. This book was well worth reading and I can easily say that the storyline of Halo is one of the best that there is. Characters are well established and the book does a good job of building suspense, despite the fact that you may already know the end of the story (since the first Halo game picks up immediately where this book leaves off). You don't have to be a geek to like this story!"
