"Bob and Mo are back, once again fighting foes that normal people can only hope never to meet, or, Cthulhu forfend, antagonise. Stross's Laundry and the reasons for its existence are such a treat - the premise that magic is done with maths and physics is never going to get old for me.
I didn't quite enjoy this as much as I did 'The Atrocity Archives', though, mainly because I felt the supporting cast of characters wasn't quite as engaging this time. I couldn't relate to Ramona (which maybe isn't a surprise, considering what she is) and I felt the book needed moar Angleton. Plus, the idea that Mo, who hasn't been in the Laundry all that long, is suddenly a super-trained, ueber-cool agent didn't quite fit.
On the other hand, the James Bond Hero geas? Is an AWESOME idea. The more I learned about its machinations, the more fun I got out of it. And so in the end, Mo's role and development was necessary and made sense, I just didn't find it quite believable enough.
Oh, but the best bit about the edition I read? Was the inclusion of the short story 'Pimpf'. Maybe it's because I'm a gamer, and I have, in fact, played Neverwinter Nights, but I really, really enjoyed that story.
All in all, a good, very quick read, but not as satisfying as 'The Atrocity Archives'."
"Hmm what can I say, It's a great James Bond-esque novel. With all the magic and technology tossed in for good measure. Stross provides really good explanations for the science in the book. It's very adult. I originally debated on letting my son read it. We're both big scifi geeks.
I definitely would suggest you read this book. It's compelled me to find the sequel called the "Atrosities Archives" wish me luck in finding it at Border's when a coupons going."
"The book was good. This book was given to me to as to try something different. It was fun and comical. It definatly gets you in touch with your inner geek. You wont realize how much of a geeek that you are untill you notice the really obscure refrences within the book, and if you dont well you are really not missing much. Definatly worth the read."
"The Jennifer Morgue at first seems like one of Those Books: the books with the elevator pitches that make them sound like a joke in a Christopher Guest movie about the publishing industry. That it is actually a fantastic, well-crafted, entertaining piece is just proof of the genius that is Charles Stross.
The elevator pitch for the whole Bob Howard series is simple: "James Bond meets H.P. Lovecraft, with a dash of quantum physics and a sprinkling of Office Space"; but what he does with that is far less simple. He has a post-modern magical system clearly rooted in Lovecraftian and actual magical tradition; a respect and love for the Bond and Cthulhu ouevres that doesn't spill out into fanboyish reverence; a real eye toward plotting a thinking man's thriller; and a beautifully wry and geeky sense of humor. The plot is well-crafted, the ending genuinely a twist, and the whole thing is written with a self-awareness and sense of wordplay that I cannot recommend highly enough. This is the second book in a series (after The Atrocity Archives), but I think this one, in a reverse of normal trends, is actually the more fantastic book."
