"i like where he's headed, but i wish he had a little more conviction about the thesis (and its implications on our salvation). this would be an important book if he didn't undermine himself with slight waffling..."
"Jesus told his disciples to make disciples. What in the world did he mean? Unfortunately the term discipleship carries a lot of baggage. Willard makes discipleship clear, although never simple."
"This will be an all-time favorite for me. Author Dallas Willard in his books has done more to inspire me in following Jesus than any other author. This book is a collection of talks, essays, and book reviews, all on the theme of what discipleship means and how it can be lived out. He's a philosopher and his approach is practical, theologically sound, and just makes sense to me. A theme throughout is that "grace is opposed to earning, not effort." Willard encourages the reader to make use of spiritual disciplines (silence, fasting, solitude, etc.) as a way to cultivate a life more conformed to the example of Christ. He challenges the tendency of Christians to overlook Jesus' logic and intelligence--and to draw rigid lines between "earthly knowledge" and the "spiritual." This sort of material could have been done in a heavy-handed or legalistic way, but Willard communicates simply and as a peer of his reader, a fellow disciple. He's gold."
