About this title: Twins, Connor and Grace, never dreamed that there was any truth to the Vampirate shanty their father sang to them before he died, but that was before the two were shipwrecked and separated from each other. For Connor, who is taken aboard a pirate ship, there's the chance to learn to swordfight, but for Grace, aboard a mysterious ship of vampire pirates, the danger is great. What will it take for them to find each other? "Totally original...I wish I'd had this idea." -Anthony Horowitz

"I would have given this a 3.5 instead of 3 stars if Goodreads had let me and if really it were worth my time to sit here and agonize over such things. Am I going to read the next book? Yeah, I am. Is this the second coming of HP, or even SP? No.
Here's a book where the concept alone was worth my good humor. For this Somper gets my hat tip, and I started this story with quite a lot of goodwill stored up. My chief complaints: much is made of how smart Grace is, but she does precious little to illustrate that quality; the pirates that Connor falls in with are sort of impossibly merciful (plus the captain has yet to demonstrate he deserves his great reputation); the back of Ma Kettle's dress (I was on board until we got to the back). The Vampirates I'm willing to give a pass until I know more; Lorcan is cool and the captain is awesomely creepy (although conviently omniscient, except when it's not).
Verdict: amusing. Let's hope the wind picks up a little."
"Twins Connor and Grace's dad die and they run from town on his boat. They wreck in the ocean and get separated. Grace gets picked up by the vampirate ship and connor gets picked up by the diablo. Life on the diablo is hard for connor without grace whom he thinks was picked up by the vampirate ship but no one believes him. Meanwhile Grace is stuck in her room on the vampirate ship. She learns about a thing called the feast and wonders what it is. She can't figure out why no one is out in the day but out in the night. She finds out the occupents of the ship are vampires. During this time connor learns the art of swordfighting and experiences his first pirate raid. But a weary traveler talks to the pirates of the diablo saying follow the tide and connor will be reunited with his sister. Will it be a happy reunion or will they have to fight for her freedom from the vampirates?"
""If Pirates are bad, and vampires are worse, then I pray that as long as I be, that though I sing of Vampirates, I never one shall see."
That's a verse from a sea shanty often sung in Vampirates. The premise is pretty obvious, right? It's pirates, who are also vampires! How cool is that! Sadly, my own review might read something like:
"If stories of pirates are good, and stories of vampires are better, then though I read the Vampirates, I pray you never do."
Ok, this book isn't THAT bad. Let's get something straight though, this is actually a kids book. Still, even as a kids book, it's pretty poor. The motivations for the characters are weak, especially the Vampirates... who seem to be a bunch of really nice people, actually. In fact the non-vampire pirates are down right the most pleasant people in the entire book! Maybe the tag line should be: "If pirates are nice, and vampires are nicer, then nothing better could happen then hooking up with the Vampirates!"
I want to say this book was a fun read, but it wasn't really... although I admit that it did kinda suck me in. The best thing I can say about it is that is was quick and easy to read. This may be an ideal book for a kid 8-12 years old, depending on how much they think vampires are cool."
"What's meaner than a pirate? A vampirate, of course. Set in the twenty-sixth century off the coast of Australia's Crescent Moon Bay, this is the story of fourteen-year-old twins Connor and Grace Tempest. When their lighthouse keeper father dies, leaving them penniless and alone, the twins take to sea. But before they can begin a new life, a ferocious storm sinks their boat and separates them-perhaps forever. Connor is plucked from the sea by a pirate ship and the athletic youngster makes fast friends with the welcoming crew, taking to the pirate life like a natural. But Grace wakes up on a very different rescue ship. Her savior, handsome Lorcan Furey, keeps her locked in a luxurious cabin. The meals are unbelievably delicious-and sleep-inducing. And the captain is the biggest puzzle of all, with his disembodied whisper and masked face. Readers won't be surprised to learn that Grace has been taken on board the ship of the Vampirates, a spooky group of vampires-turned-pirates that the twins' father used to sing a lullaby-style sea shanty about. The narrative alternates between Connor and Grace, giving readers a vivid description of life on a pirate ship while building up the mystery of the Vampirates. The union of vampire and pirate is a clever one, and Vampirates: Demons of the Ocean is a fast, breezy, fun read, complete with a cliff-hanger ending that paves the way for a new thrilling series of Vampirate books. A good recommendation for boys or reluctant readers."
