"I wanted to give this four stars, but if I really thought about that desire, it would honestly be because of how much I enjoyed Cold Mountain... and the FIRST half of this novel.
Frazier's second starts out as a lovely ode to Cherokee living in the Carolina mountains; a bound boy, Will, is shipped off to run a trading post on his own, and taken into the community of Cherokee via Bear. Bear shepherd's the boy into a man, and Cherokee living, just before the infamous President Jackson starts relocating the Nation of Cherokee out West. As the Cherokees are torn off their land, Will's loyalty to both Claire and his adopted family of Bear and neighbors, are sorely tested; and unfortunately, Will doesn't meet with any of his challenges very well. Frazier's protagonist starts out so strong; self educated, hard working, and sympathetic to his adopted people. It's just a shame that Will ducks out periodically to hide behind his broken heart, and is honestly just an easily distracted guy."
"Had this book not been picked by the lovely Julie for our Oct/Nov book club, I probably would have never picked it up. This time period of history in fiction (early 1800s through Civil War) is just not my preferred century (I'm more a contemporary kind of girl), but a recent trip to the South with visits to the cities of Charleston and Savannah DID help me develop more of an interest in this novel (cities that feature frequently throughout).
My biggest issue with this book was my inability to really connect with the main character, Will Cooper, a man who lays out his story from being an orphan to being accepted by an Indian tribe, to keeping that tribe on his land throughout the awful chapter of American history that was our push of the Indians westward.
His life is full of so many material things and so many fascinating experiences but proof that all of that is nothing without someone to love beside you.
I loved the many lush descriptions of the Appalachian landscaped Frazier provided, but finished this book feeling sad, having taken pity on the main character. There was no message to lift me up beyond that and perhaps that was what lacked most for me in its pages."
"This is almost a reworking of the Inman/Ada tale from Cold Mountain. Will could be Inman's father, and Claire is Ada without restrictor plates (see Nascar). A beautiful, complex love develops between Will and Claire... and Bear and Will... and Bear and Claire... did I mention complex? But in what has become a hallmark of Frazier novels, happily ever after was not meant to be and Will winds out his days without Claire... an inverted Cold Mountain ending. I've got to say, at the pivotal moment when Will could have asked Claire to stay with him, I could understand Will's need to hear Claire tell him she wanted to stay instead of leaving it up to him. When she wouldn't, he didn't ask, so they went their separate ways. Subconsciously, it almost felt like Claire was sticking with the lifestyle (and money) with which she had grown accustomed. Why take a chance on true love and romance when you can have a sugar daddy? I can forgive her for that. Will did.
There's an image in my mind of Claire skinnydipping in the middle of the creek on a moonlit night that still haunts me. Frazier is an amazing wordsmith, even if he hates happy endings. I will be reading his next book, and his next..."
"I was looking forward to reading this book because I had enjoyed "Cold Mountain", also by Frazier. What a disappointment! The first third of the book matched his first novel in quality of writing and story-telling. Then the novel seemed to flounder. The writing became less evocative; the characters were one-dimensional; and the plot went nowhere. The novel did not seem to have much point. What could have been an enlightening look at a dark period of American history was muddled and unfocused. It was as if Frazier couldn't decide whether he wanted to write a historical novel or a romance. Speaking of romance, where was it? Claire never seemed like a real person, only a fantasy of the main character (and the author). She did not convey any sense of humanity, but then neither did Will, the main character. I also felt that the book had a very masculine edge to it. The author made a point of describing and referring to bodily functions. Was that to create a sense of time and place? It didn't succeed. Having fleshed-out characters would have done that. Reading this book felt like a pointless exercise. I only forced myself to finish it because our book group was discussing it. In fact, half of the group did not finish the book. By the end of the meeting and our discussion, they decided that they would give up on "Thirteen Moons" and read "Cold Mountain" instead."
