"I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The history of our country's growth as an economic player and power is linked to the history of our navy. The original appropriation for the six vessels was extremely controversial at the time. There were may in our country, especially those whose livelihood was farming, that were against any kind of standing military force. The building of these ships helped create the mythology of our country's development. Without them, there would be no "shores of Tripoli" or "Old Ironsides". It is truly a shame that only one of the boats, U.S.S. Constitution, is still in existence."
"As am armchair admiral, I have learned that amateurs discuss tactics, while the professionals discuss logistics. This book has both. We learn how various sea battles were fought but also the events that lead up to them. My emotions and feelings pendulummed while reading the book.
As Toll explained the founding of the navy, I cheered for the Americans.
When he got into the causes of the War of 1812, I, as a Canadian and Commonwealth citizen, felt upset at how the Brits behaved. Briefly, a key reason for the war was impressment of American citizens by the British Navy. They had to, to defeat the greatest general and tyrant in the world, Napoleon. Still, their disregard for the rights of Americans drove the US into battle.
Forester, and his stories of the British Navy fighting the French are what got me into nautical history and this book. To see the less admirable side of the Navy's actions was, well, disappointing.
The Americans fought well and I began to enjoy their victories, just as the tide turned and they began to lose.
War is futile, but sea battles can be beautiful are the main conclusions I drew form the book."
