Description: New in New jacket. pp. 304. Nearly 150 years after publishing his theory of evolution, Charles Darwin remains not only central to biology and medicine but also deeply controversial. Darwin still receives much of the credit, and the blame, for what science understands about the evolutionary process and what society thinks we should--or shouldnít--teach about that process in our schools. David Quammen has created a meticulous, humane portrait of the man, and a lucid explication of his work, that ... read more
I had this book for dessert, but recommend it as an appetizer. Maybe I'm not the right person to review this book: I'm already a bit of a Darwinhead, have already read Origin and at least one biography. I didn't read this to get something new, it was more for enjoyment. And enjoy I did. Quammen has distilled the complexity of Darwin's life but has preserved its richness."
"Listened to this book on a car trip with Jim. We both found it fascinating. Darwin, the man, is surprisingly sympathetic and warm. The story of his slow, careful rolling out of his discoveries with little attachment to credit and fame is also surprising."
"Anyone who's interested in how religious doctrine imposes control on free thinking needs to learn how Darwin almost let his discovery of the theory of evolution remain unpublished (for almost 20 years) because he was afraid it would embarrass his devout wife and alienate him from polite society. Only when the uneducated young collector of exotic fauna started noticing patterns of variation between his specimens and wrote a scholarly article about it, did Darwin hurry forth to claim credit. And the theory --perhaps the most logical and easily understood of biological science, so long as one isn't bound by faith to factor in an intelligent designer, is still under assault! If only the genes for common sense conferred more reproductive advantage. Everyone who is interested in free thought and pursuit of truth should know this story."
"I liked learning about the person of Darwin; I've never read anything about him before. So in that sense, the book was good, but I don't really care for books written by journalists (including and especially Thomas Friedman): especially histories or biographies. This one was par for the course. The author seemed to delight in, and relish telling about, Darwin's loss of faith as his theories about transmutation solidified--I found that kind of annoying."
