"I don't really like sharon shinn after all! i think that her books are quite immature and not well thought-out. Some of her plot lines and plot devices don't even adequately explain or provide relevant reasons for what happens. I thought the ending (the saving of Ellynor) was lame and over-dramatic and over-romatntic.
Another thing that has irked at me is that Justin and Ellynor fell in love so fast. It was like bang, you're in love. Declarations of love abounded, with stolen kisses too. It seems very cliche, along with the 'big strong man meets little woman that he wants to protect' thing. Not that I'm against that plot line itself, but Shinn just gave it too much of a fairytale shimmer and frankly couldn't carry it off. It didn't sound plausible to me as I read the book and was disgusted by the constant 'I can't stop thinking of you!', 'i want you always by my side!', 'no, i need to go so i can see that she's safe!' nonsense. I mean, I understand wanting to express your feelings but this is just ridiculous and over-the-top.
I'm very sorry to say this, but although I really like the 6 main characters, after reading just the second of the books (mystic and rider was the first) they got kind of boring for me. I loved how each of them was different from each other and complemented each other so wonderfully, and reading about how they got along with each other. But they never changed. The dynamics never changed between them. In general as well, none of the characters changed. (which is what makes a story good) All the characters kept to their own stereotypes (Kirra: the beautiful intelligent serramerra mystic. Donal: the faithful, quiet shapeshifter)
Sharon Shinn billed these books as romantic fantasies. But she seemed not to know how to write the sword-fighting scenes. See Renamski's review.
Finally, I think that Sharon Shinn on her own is not a very good writer. Please don't hate me, people. She has a slightly stilted, formulaic way of writing. 'Someone says something, someone laughs. Then someone else makes a witty comment back. And repeat'.
All in all, this books is for people who don't really care about technicalities and who love (overly?) sappy romance stories with hints of action."
"I started this book awhile ago, got bored, and then picked it up again later. I did enjoy it. I guess I did not feel that the danger was as real as in Reader and Raelynx. I always like these books best when the core six are together."
