"Another YA project book. I mostly picked this one because of the title. It was an interesting book. I think I would ultimately give it 3 1/2 stars because the ending was rather abrupt and the beginning took forever to get into the story. The book is a story about 15 yr old Fanboy (Donnie) who is a really smart guy but sadly, like most smart boys, is completely inept when it comes to dealing with things outside of academics or in Fanboy's case comics and graphic novels. He has isolated himself from his family (his parents are divorced, he calls his step-dad "the step-fascist" and his mom is pregnant with the step-dad's child). He barely has any friends, except for Cal, the token black guy at school who happens to be really smart also and into comics. One day after a grueling day of school filled with bullying and being used as a punching bag, someone sends him pictures of the bully beating him up as the teachers stand by and do nothing. The person who took them wants to meet. The next day he meets Kyra, the Goth Girl with an attitude. They start to bond right away, even though Fanboy keeps telling himself he doesn't like her like that. And the whole time they are starting to become friends, he is working on his graphic novel called "Schemata" and wants to get it published. It was a good book once it got into the whole Kyra/Fanboy story. I would like to see what happens to these two kids, as I said, the story ended rather abruptly and I know there's a second book."
"A novel for all the underdogs out there. I'm giving this book four stars for the voice. Lyga captures that tortured, conflicted, awkward stage in life with Fanboy, a nerdy boy who's smarter than everyone else, a little picked on for his size and goody two-shoes, and completely clueless about girls. So authentic 15-year-old boy it hurts. Obsessed with his graphic novel and focused on getting good grades as his way out, Fanboy's view of life changes when he meets Goth Girl, an emo chick who questions everything with way too much take-it-personally emotion. I enjoyed seeing high school through fanboy's eyes, the good kid you want to root for, and watching him figure things out (note that as you wander through this boy's thoughts, he's going to think about girls). It's real and dorky and funny and a little dark and pure teenage overwhelmed with parents and teachers and students without being whiny. It's a great voice. I almost wanted to read a graphic novel after this, almost, but not quite."
"Donnie - xianwalker76 - is a good student with a passion for graphic novels. He's small for his age (15) and defines himself as a "geek." He lives in the basement of his pregnant mother and step-fascist's house and he keeps a "List" of all the people who treat him badly and bully him. Kyra - Promethea387 - is a goth-dressing, mysterious, revellious, motherless girl who drives a different car every day (without a license), and who tried to commit suicide in the past. When they become friends, Kyra forces Donie to confront some of his ideas about people and relationships and pushes him to publish his own graphic novel, Schemata. Donnie's best friend Cal is an African American lacrosse player who also likes graphic novels and comics. Donnie has a crush on Dina Jurgens, a blond and beautiful senior. There are many graphic novel references (Eisner, X-men, Gaiman's Sandman, etc.) and Donnie makes lots of observations about people and life that are on target. I think that quite a few high school and mature middle school students would find Donnie and Kyra's world to be very realistic."
"Fanboy (do we ever learn his real name?) is a 15 yr old sophomore nerd loser, who likes comics (big surprise, huh?) His one friend is Cal, a 'stealth geek' who is also an uber-popular jock and one of the only black kids at the school, so he doesn't have a lot of time for fanboy between lacrosse practice & being 'street' to impress the girls. Fanboy has a secret- he's got an 'out' - his own top secret graphic novel that will land him a publishing contract and a ticket out of his deadend suburban hell. IF he can ever manage to tell anyone about it. (The plot involves his plan to show it to Michael Bendis at a comic convention, impress the hell out of him, and magically become the next big thing in graphic novels.)
Then there's Kyra (aka Goth Girl) who watches him get beat up in gym class... and suddenly starts IMing him. Goth Girl has her own issues (enough so that Lyga is apparently giving her her own book this year-yay!) but she also suddenly becomes Fanboy's new best friend.
Really, it's a cool book. Lots of dorky comic book references (this is how fanboy's inner monologue works) but he's funny and very self-depreciating, and very REAL. The whole thing is very REAL - nothing ever goes to plan, but it's not a stupid teen drama after school special, and it doesn't smack of 'growing up' - even though in the end, you could say that's kinda what happens. It reminds me a lot of the literature that resonated for me at that age, not exactly 'Bell Jar' or 'Catcher in the Rye' - and the pop culture references are gonna date the HELL out of this book real quick (which is too bad) - but it's messy and unresolved but livable. And the comic book geekery doesn't overwhelm. Life sucks, and you endure... sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. Live and learn, and get a helmet. And if your security blanket is a bullet in your pocket... or a wish for Giant Size Xmen #1, so be it. Not every kid blows up their school for revenge - but a lot of us think about it. Zero tolerance policies can suck it - as Kyra would say."
