"The boy and I have been talking about castles lately and Mom remembered this book she read as a kid. So far it has been great, but the idea of a toy coming to life has caused some trauma with his active imagination and dinosaur toys.
Very exciting finish! This was a good book which even I enjoyed. The story was very well written and really movs along. It did get pretty intense near the end, but I think the boy handled it well. We already have the sequel and are itching to get started. If your kids can handle some intensity (no death but there are some stressful scenes of conflict with a dragon and the evil wizard) then this will be a hit!"
"Castle in the Attic is a story about a boy named William, his mom, and what she is doing. The mom is leaving her home to go live with her cousin. William, however does not want her to go. William gets a present from his mom. It is a big castle. He finds a Silver Knight and finds out that it is alive. His name was Sir Simon. He and William became friends. Later, he finds a token that shrinks people. William did it on his mother. She did not talk to him after that until he got down there with her. A little while later, he shrunk himself. He went to the magic world with Sir Simon across the drawbridge to fight the Wisord. He got to his castle, and killed him. The town was free! He found the token that would turn his mother and himself back to nomal size. Soon, they did that, and all her plans had changed."
"Fun book. Young boy, 10, is given a toy castle by his nanny who is leaving to go back to England. The boy, William, is very upset that Mrs. Phillips is leaving. When he discovers that the castle, or more accurately, the Silver Knight that comes with it, is enchanted, he devises a plan to keep her with him. And thus begins a very satisfying tale of fantasy and heroism.
I listened to the audio version of this book - read by the author along with an entire cast. I can't say it was the best audio book I've ever listened to. As often is the case, the reading by the author, while interesting, wasn't great. And it wasn't just the author. I often kept thinking to myself that I wish I had opted to read this one instead of listening to it."
"My almost 9-year-old son and I read this together, a chapter or two a night. He can't believe this book hasn't received some kind of award--he's enjoying it much more than Indian in the Cupboard, even though it's the same concept. A perfect adventure story for this age group, especially if the child is interested in knights & chivalry. Enough technical castle terminology to make him feel smart :), and enough symbolism, foreshadowing, character growth, etc. to ponder for his English-teacher mother to approve."
