"This is the second book in the Soldier Son Trilogy.
In this world, the second son born in the family is dedicated to the military according to the religious views. Nevare, being of noble decent, gets to start as an officer in the King's Army. The second book picks up with Nevare after his first year in the Academy. He goes on leave to attend his older bother's wedding. Since Nevare's brush with the plague, he's been gaining weight at a steady rate. So much so that he becomes the disgrace of his family and is dismissed from the Academy indefinitely.
I'll admit that this installment goes by pretty slowly. There are no epic battles or many rewarding moments for the protagonist, either. The prose, however, are so enchanting that I didn't mind. Hobb paints such a vivid world, it's near impossible to get sucked in.
I would recommend this book along with any other novel Robin Hobb has written. A fantasy lover would not be disappointed."
"I find Hobb's books so frustrating--she creates amazing, interesting worlds, and then inevitably seems to make the main character such a clod that he's completely unable to appreciate them at all. The reader is left to seethe in annoyance as the protagonist seems to willfully refuse to do what's necessary to save things and treats things that are clearly valuable badly, all the while whining about his hard luck.
So far this series is no exception--Nevare stumbles from one dilemma to the next, managing to avoid doing anything helpful in any of the various directions he is torn. As usual, Hobb piles cruel indignity and suffering on his head, but somehow it doesn't make me like him any more, it just makes me wish for the book to be over.
In addition, this book was specifically uncomfortable for me. Nevare is cursed by magic to gain weight, and the first half of the book is basically a great deal of details about his growing fatter and fatter, the difficulties his weight gain brings him, his rejection by his family and his physical discomfort, his attempts to diet (with loving paragraph after paragraph about food, food, food and how good it is and how he needs to control himself and ration his portions while his body cries out for more) and exercise and hopeless despair as his body balloons out of control. It all felt...squeamishly intimate to me, and despite not having many more body weight issues than your average woman, it left me uncomfortable and self-conscious for quite a while each time I put it down. I suppose it was supposed to, in an attempt to make people think about the issues of being overweight, but...I'm pretty aware already that society is harsh to overweight people.
I'll finish the third book because I already bought it, but I'm pretty tired of the dynamic Hobbs has in her books where the main character is so unlikeable and yet all the brave, interesting, kind characters around him think he's the greatest thing ever."
"I read in a review at work that, while the second in the Soldier Son trilogy was good, it was partial to the "middle book syndrome" (or something like that). In which it doesn't have a very good beginning and an unsatisfying end, because it's not really the beginning or the end of a series, it just continues without living up to your expectations of the first book.
I have to agree with this because there was something that was mildly interesting within the first two hundred pages, but then it went completely downhill from there until the very end. Nevare is a very whiney character and not all that bright when figuring things out. There were quite a few times when I wanted to either slap him or throw the book. The next and final "good" part of the book would have to be the last 50 or 60 pages, which, in itself, is disappointing because you've had to read all this other stuff in between.
If you read this book, the only advice is to get through it. The third book is much better."
"The second novel in the Soldier Son trilogy was a lot darker than the first one. In Forest Mage, Nevare falls from grace and faces an astonishing amount of disfortune. He's terribly lonely and dejected and though a lot of it isn't his fault, his almost constant cry of 'It wasn't me, this isn't fair' did get on my nerves after a while. The highlights of the novel for me were Nevare's interactions with Amzil and her kids and Spink and Epiny. Those two stole every scene they were in and I hope we see them again in the concluding part of the series. Lastly, the last chapter was brilliant. I loved the way the story was resolved and it was a great hook to pick up the next volume. Overall, I did find it hard to put this book down and after I finished it, I immediately started on the last book of the series. And it is exactly that kind of pulling power that makes this book such a good read!"
