"All ages (focus on different areas for different ages)
Wiener incorporated alot fo realism in his illustrations for Flotsam, using bright colors and realistic scenes from the beach where you almost hear the seagulls. He uses framing of different sizes to help tell the story. Text is limited to signs in teh scenery and the wtiting on the camera. Kids would enjoy exploring the beach with the main character and imagining adventures under the sea and from different time periods. Wiesner cleverly uses his illustration to tell a story with in a story.
I personally do like this book what so ever. I think it is visually overwhelming and because of that it was very hard for me to focus on what the author was conveying through his story. By the fourth and fifth time of looking through the book, and with the help of classmates began to understand what this book was truly about.
This book could be used in: Language Arts: Making the words for the pictures Science: Microscope use and fish dissection Social Studies: Research or learn about different periods of time in relation to the periods of the children's pictures in the story."
"Grade levels: All appropriate. Grades K-1 may require teachers story and questions but grades higher should be able to inquire and predict own outcomes. Wiesner uses a great deal of detail into his pictures that may be missed the first time reading through the story. The endpages are made into a sandy texture to give a beach feeling. Then, the blending between the sand of the water and the beach creates a very realistic flow. The framing around the outsides of the pictures seems to represent and model the frame around a picture. The text is an interesing aspect of the book as their isn't any normal text throughout the book except for the note written by the author in the front sleeve. The text that is shown in the story does give a lot of important information that requires the reader to do some investigating and read between the lines. It seems that children would enjoy this story because of the open ended ideas that can be created through the story. I believe that every child that read this would probably have a different view and a different story to tell based off the pictures. Also, the beach scence provides a calming feeling for all. The book was effective in the sense that it does require readers to think about the pictures and really create their own imagination. I believe that some of the ideas that the author had are a little deep for age it's written for, but even if the children miss the point, they will get a good experience from the adventure. There are several content areas that you could use this book. The areas that I would use it for would start with language arts. I would have the children look through the book and create their own story. The other area I would use it in would be science. I think it would be a neat project to create and develop film and possibly plan a project with a cooperating school to trade pictures back and forth just like they were through the ocean. I would use this story in the classroom as a small group reading and I would have the children write their own words."
"All ages - (they would get different things at different levels) Wiesner incorporates a lot of realism in his illustration for Flotsam, using bright colors and realistic scenes from the beach where you could almost hear the seagulls. Kids would enjoy exploring the beach with the main character and imagining adventures under the sea and from different time periods. Wiesner cleverly uses his illustrations to tell a story within a story. I personally didnt like the book very much due to their being no words, I must rather read a book with words than just look at pictures. Science / Languages Arts Have students write the words to the story. Introduce a microscope or film processing."
Flotsam is a wordless picture book for readers of all ages. Flotsam won the Caldecott Medal and is a fantasy book due to the supernatural elements within the book as well as elements from extraordinary worlds (the underwater world). Flotsam is about a young boy's trip to the beach. While at the beach, the boy finds a camera and has the film developed. The resulting pictures give him insight into a fantastical underwater world where fish are robotic, an octopus reads to her young, aliens land underwater, and fish use blowfish as a hot air balloon. Also within the camera were pictures of people who had previously found the camera holding pictures of other people who had found the camera. The boy takes a picture of himself to add to the picture within a picture within a picture within a picture record and throws the camera back into the sea."
